Schools don't like to be turned down, so many times you never hear of a school going after a coach. Behind the scenes workings, but every now and then, things leak. Or coaches and agents want a leak.
What does hiring a coach in waiting have to do with the LSU situation? Come on Dad put your thinking cap on. Jimbo and Muschump were coaches that were hired from the get go to be the future head coach. They were seen as the future head coach when hired, they weren't simply position coaches that were promoted when the program couldn't find anyone else.
