Shoop's resume may be limited but he does have experience in the SEC and Big 10. Before he went to Vanderbilt, they ranked 84th (nationally) in total defense. His first year, 2011, the Dores finished 19th in total defense and remained a top 25 defense for his three years there. That's with Vanderbilt talent. With a bit more talent, he took Penn St from 24th ranked D to #2 in one year. His bio from the PSU Athletic site: Bob Shoop brings 25 years of collegiate coaching experience back to his home state as the Nittany Lions' defensive coordinator and safeties coach. A native of Oakmont, Pa., Shoop was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Vanderbilt the past three years, directing the Commodores to Top 25 finishes in total defense every season: 18th (2011), 19th (2012) and 23rd (2013). Shoop's defense forced 30 turnovers last season, tied for 10th nationally, including 24 over the final eight games, boosting VU to a 6-2 finish. The Commodores won their last five games in 2013, allowing 15.6 ppg during the streak. His 2012 unit held opponents to just 18.7 points per game, the lowest by a VU squad since 1997, and ranked in the Top 15 nationally in pass and scoring defense. Shoop helped mentor cornerback Casey Heyward, who grabbed seven interceptions in 2011 and is tied for the Vanderbilt career record with 15 interceptions, earn All-America and All-SEC honors as a senior. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and led all rookies with six interceptions. Blown away is a relative term, but I think his resume is impressive. We don't know everyone Miles is considering or talking to but Shoop compares well with the names I've heard. In ATVS, Shoop described his defensive philosophy as being "based on two premises, relentless pursuit and never‑ending pressure. First thing I say to the guys all the time is everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the face. We throw the first punch and keep on punching. We make sure it's not the last punch and keep on punching. That's who we are." I don't know how he is as a recruiter but I doubt he's a drop off from Chavis, more likely an improvement. I would be happy with this hire..
Signing day is less than a month out. I get that nothing can be done in the quiet period but with a serious vacancy, recruits are already looking elsewhere. Not only that but you've got to plan time with recruits who already committed and were in love with Chavis. USC has a vacancy at Oline and I'm thankful that Edoga out of Georgia is an early admit, starting classes this week because Michigan (former Oline coach) wanted to go after him.-
the question is, did shoop get an offer and turn us down or did les just not offer? this will determine my wearefucked factor. just hire O (which he will never do) and be done with it. brick can stay where hes at. I want an O-face on our program. if not, i guess the welter joke is on me. come on down, dj, no one else is interested.
I've tried to withhold judgement but now I'm feeling like we may be going the promote former fail Baylor DC route. And it would be shocking for Miles to let Wild Boys Orgeron on his staff. And I've got this sinking feeling that Miles is fracking things up because he won't let the DC bring in his own guys. You do have to consider recruiting, but I think the driving factor is Miles wants to be a nice guy. Don't want Miles as AD, he'd never fire anyone - golden parachutes for all.
The problem is that all these guys just signed extensions. My gut tells me that the the issue might be the clause that PO'd Chavis is making the offer look less than appealing for someone LSU is asking to uproot their family and move across the country for a new job. For coaches already here with their families settled that clause might be less of an issue.
