The prevailing thought was not only more money then, but it moved him up in the way the state retirement system works. I can't recall if it changed his "time table," but I know it changed the amount he will collect. I think the move put him three years away from the state educators retirement which is based on the highest three years (salary) of his time in the system. He was making 175K at Jax State; 600K at UAB. (I wonder if his settlement, assuming he is getting one since the UAB football program is no longer, has something built in that covers the two years he needed for the full retirement compensation.)
I have no idea who LSU is going to hire for DC, and I agree that it's a crucial hire. However, your post makes it sound like Miles just wants to sit on this job and not win. I would have to think that is as false as it gets.
I don't care who we get as long as we are productive on that side of the ball. I would like to see us more aggressive at the DL position with LB who can stop the run. We also were not very discipline with gap assignment and tackling this year. Someone who would push for fundamental football would be nice too. If Brick is the man, then I support that, if not then I just hope we don't hire someone just to fill the vacancy, but get the right fit.
I don't believe he doesn't want to win in any way, otherwise he wouldn'tbe a coach and refuse to say the word lose, rather finish second. I think he has gotten more stubborn as is career has progressed at LSU. He believes that he doesn't need to change so Brick is an easier move to promote. Again, maybe Brick is the best hire, my opinion is that the program needs a little infusion of new ideas and bringing in an outsider is the way to bring new ideas. We have to trust that Miles is making the right decision but if it going to Brick, I just wish he would get on with it already.
I think the fact that it is taking time is proof that the right, or should I say best available will get the job. I'm sure we will pick apart whomever he hires, but we do not know all the details so I am sure it will be best available. BTW I do share your urgency!
It's a recruiting dead period right now, so it's not 100% critical that a decision be made right now. What is much more important is that when the 'dead period' is over, the new DC hits the trail running at full speed and starts talking to the kids that are thinking twice now that Chavis left.
Or you can have a DC picked out (Maybe leaked), send Miles on more in-home visits (because the NCAA allows more visits to head coach if a vacancy on the staff) and discuss the replacement. Then when new coach has all the requirements completed to join have more contact with the prospects leading up to signing day.
PSU Rivals forum fans believe Shoop is gone. They don't blame him for taking the money and blame their BOT for destroying their program. They know PSU can't match what LSU is sure to offer. One delusional poster thinks LSU is a step down but it is pretty much a consensus that they hate to see Shoop leave. I hope their pessimism is warranted.
Shoop maybe an outstanding young DC, but I'm not blown away by his limited resume and I don't think recruits will be either. What's the scoop on shoop when it comes to recruiting?
