Gundy Takes OverTerry Tush - Scout.com January 3, 2005 at 5:08pm ET Mike Gundy is living proof that dreams do come true. The 37-year-old Gundy, who said his dream of becoming a college head coach began when he was 15 years old at Midwest City High School, was officially introducted as the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys at a news conference Monday afternoon in Stillwater. Gundy, who has been OSU's assistant head coach and offensive coordinator the past four seasons, replaces Les Miles who resigned on Sunday to take over as head coach at LSU. "I've very, very excited," Gundy said. "This is my New York Yankees job. At times in our profession people will tell you (that) you're not supposed to ever let the administration know that you're their last stop. Well, I don't have a problem with that because I'm so fired up to be here at Oklahoma State and be working with the administration and the people we have here. I wanted to go and recruit immediately, (but) obviously we had to take care of business." Joe DeForest, who has been special teams coordinator coordinator the past four seasons, was named assistant head coach. Defensive line coach Carey Bailey and offensive line coach Chuck Moller are the only other two coaches who did not decide to join Miles at LSU. "We, as a staff, will hire first class people who understand exactly what we talked about earlier," Gundy said. "We're going to recruit good men, we're going to expect them to go to class, we're going to expect them to graduate and on Saturdays we're going to expect them to win games." Gundy has served as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at OSU since Miles took over as head coach. Gundy is a former Cowboy quarterback from 1986-1989 during a very successful run by the Oklahoma State program. He directed the Cowboys to back-to-back 10-win seasons and bowl appearances (Sun Bowl in '87 and Holiday Bowl in '88) in 1987-88. During his career he established numerous game, season and career passing records that remain intact today. Gundy threw for 7,997 yards and 49 touchdowns. His final three seasons rank as three of the top five single-season passing performances in school history. His 429-yard passing performance against Kansas during his senior season (1989) remains the most passing yards in a single game by any OSU quarterback. He also still holds OSU's record for career total offense (7,749 yards) and has six of OSU's top 30 single-game passing performances. Gundy joined the OSU coaching staff on Feb. 8, 1990, just months after concluding his playing career, as the Cowboys' receivers coach. He was named quarterbacks coach prior to the 1991 season and served in that capacity under Pat Jones until being named offensive coordinator prior to the '94 season. He spent the '95 season at the Cowboys' quarterback coach after Bob Simmons was hired. He left OSU to join the staff at Baylor in '96 and served as the Bears' quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for one year. In 1997, Gundy accepted a job at Maryland where he spent four years. He was receivers coach for three seasons and was promoted to passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2000. Gundy returned to Stillwater when Miles was hired in 2001. He was named assistant head coach and offensive coordinator by Miles. Gundy and his wife Kristen have two sons, Gavin and Gunnar.
Conflicting information, at his press conference, Coach Gundy said Porter was staying. I don't know. At this point it's Les Miles vs. Mike Gundy, at the very least it should be fun to see how it plays out.
Besides the conflicting information, who do you feel are the best recruiters on that staff, in order?
At first scan on Monday, I figured (and hoped) that DeForest might follow him because of his Louisiana ties. It's doubtful that Miles would make him assistant head coach though. Good keep for you guys. I've heard nothing but good things about the guy.
There are many good coaches out there. I would bet it is $ vs. $$ as to where these assistants end up unless there are extenuating circumstances.
