I have to disagree with you a little bit, i was right in the middle of the WVU fans, and they never got louder than we did. I thought the crowd however did suck. The booing was crap, and the Geaux Tigers chants did suck also, but they never got louder, and at times we did get real loud. You are absolutely correct about the Defense. Why we can't cheer just as loud for that D is beyond me, that is aspect of the game we should be loudest for anyway, the D needs the crowd. The O doesn't. The O needs a shot or something. Another thing you hit on, the real fans being priced out, I totally agree with that. Everything is so damned expensive, it's almost like a mini vacation you have to plan for coming out of town.
About pricing fans out of the stadium, I think that's become universal across the country and a lot of teams(pro and college) have a less "working class" crowd and more of a "rich person" crowd. I also think that teams are starting to realize that they need a group of the working class, loud, obnoxious, drunk fans that will bend the rules and generally act like fools. You might not like all of their actions, but the level of passion and excitement rubs off on others and can make the other fans want to come back. I think a lot of stadiums are beginning to institute "die hard fan zones"(obviously called like Touchdown central or something), and lowering ticket prices for that section.
This is very true, unfortunately. A little personal perspective.....had 8 40 yard line seats 13 rows off the field, had them for nearly 10 years! Although I could afford to continue to pay the increasing price tag, finally had enough. When built a new house recently, also included a sports bar with outdoor living area...figured money better spent. Still, miss the stadium atmosphere though!
Good point, because the rise of HDTV's means that more fans are willing to watch games at home on a big TV. They are willing to pay the $100 for a NFL sunday ticket and have a really good picture anyway. Honestly, I think it's a wonder that the SEC can draw so many fans to games, especially when some states don't generally have that large of populations.
I think it depends on where you were sitting. I did not notice any larger of an exodus than usual. People always leave in the forth quarter unless it was a close game, and despite the score this one was not close. Tigers were in control the whole time, I never got a "oh no we are in trouble" feeling. There was plenty of cheering and chanting as well. I will have to admit that the later half of the 4th had a "meh" feel to it. I think that is just because it was fricking late and not much action was going on the field to captivate the crowed. Overall I felt is was a good night in tiger stadium.
Oh, and I don't think the fans are being "priced out." I know a lot of people who stopped buying season tickets because you can watch every game, be it on TV or Tigervision, at home.
My fiance and I graduated from LSU in 2008. We loved going to the games while we were students. We are loud, we participate, and we cheer for our team, and make as much noise as we can to support our defense. However, as soon as we graduated, it suddenly costs us a couple grand to get season tickets. We have good jobs, but we just can't afford that. We also knew other students who were willing to give us their student tickets, but then LSU started charging $78+ per ticket to transfer student tickets into your name, then stopped it altogether. Over the last 2 seasons, we were offered tickets in the nosebleeds ( sec 110, Upper ) by a local businessman who gets 18 tickets for the low low price of $3000. Now, we can occasionally get tickets when someone we know can't make a game - my father, my cousin, friends of the family, etc. Over the past 2 seasons, we have sat in several different non-student sections of the stadium, and as much as we enjoy being there for the game, the atmosphere in much of Death Valley sucks. No one cheers unless a huge play is made, people don't participate in the band cheers, there are 5-10 bleacher coaches bitching about every call and every mistake. In the student section, people stand for nearly the entire game, but if you stand anywhere else, some prissy old bag and her husband who don't give a damn about lsu football throw a tantrum. People leave early if things are going well, aren't going well, or at the beginning of the 4th qtr just to avoid traffic. Whoever said that LSU has priced the real fans out of Death Valley is truly speaking the truth. Anywhere you go in the stadium you are surrounded by fickle fairweather fans..........and its a damn shame.
our seats are now close to $1000 per year per seat. and that's not even counting the price of the tickets themselves and other expenses that come with going to a game. that is why fans are choosing to stay home and watch it on TV. for the price of 2-3 tickets, you can buy a bad ass home theater system that will last more than just 1 season.
I just moved from State college PA where I attended 4-5 PSU home games a year at Beaver stadium. This is my take on the LSU / Tiger stadium. The section I sat in wasn't what I call a knowledgeable fan base. They individuals behind me kept booing the playcalling and wanting Les Miles to throw deep bombs every other play. I think what I was seeing is the Madden football crowd coming of age and attending games. The excitement overall wasn't what I expected from a big out of conference game. The only time the crowd got loud was in the 4th qtr when the WVU offense was trapped near the student section. And what's with the individuals standing the entire game. I understand standing at some points of the game but the guy next to me felt the need to stand the entire game blocking the view of the elderly lady behind him. I witnessed this at the MSU game and again yesterday at the LSU game. If someone had felt the need to stand up in front of me while everyone else was seated, I'd say something. Maybe everyone is just more polite in the south.
Yeah, I totally disagree with this. I don't know how anyone can believe that the quality fans are not being priced out of the ability to attend the games. Its becoming more and more obvious. In fact, a ton of the tickets are being bought up by wealthy folks and businesses who just dole out the tickets to their friends or their employees/business partners. People who many want to watch the game, but who don't really CARE about the game.
