So who would be in favor of law-makers passing a law punishing (with a reasonable fine) people who substitute "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" for the national anthem that they agreed to sing at State of City addresses, just like Rene Marie did here? Who would be in favor of the courts holding that such a law doesn't violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution?

i completely agree with that, but the more i think about it, i wonder what is worse? what this woman did, or fat obnoxious rosanne barr singing and massacring the national anthem.

what this woman did was use absolutely no judgement about the appropriateness of political and artistic expression. what rosanne did was uncaringly butcher the song (and from what i could tell, thought was pretty funny).

I am not in favor of any such law. What has been breached is trust, in this case. The lady was invited to sing our national anthem, and she did not do what she was asked to do. She has lost my trust, and ticked me off. I would never invite her to perform for me again, nor buy her music. End of discussion.

I think it would be stupider to pass laws forbidding stupidity.

Rene Marie was invited to sing at the recent Colorado Prayer Luncheon -- an annual black-tie event where the members of the US State of Colorado's Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches gather to pray, listen to scripture, and listen to a main speaker, in this case an award-winner Christian author.

At this event, where Rene Marie was invited to be the musical performer, one of the two songs she sang was the exact same rendition of “Lift Every Voice” to the national anthem’s tune that she sang at the Denver State of City Address -- and when she sang it there, at the Colorado Prayer Luncheon, in front of Colorado's political leaders, she got a standing ovation.

So I find it hard to believe that she was just being a jerk by singing it as the national anthem at the Denver State of City Address. I think she incorrectly, but honestly thought it would go over well (yes, she made a judgment error, but her intent was not malicious).

Sure, she was being dishonest by what she did, just like friends who lie to a friend to set him up for a surprise birthday party lie to him, and just like parents lie to their children about Santa Claus. All of that is dishonest. But that's because they thought it would go over well (I actually know a person who got angry at her parents for lying to her about her surprise birthday party because what they were going to do for her birthday instead was something she had always wanted to do).

The big picture is that, yes, the national anthem is a sacred thing to America, and it hurts us Americans when someone doesn't appreciate that. But, in that same vein, I think the US Constitution, and the revolutionary ideas for mankind that it espoused, including the freedom of expression, are just as sacred.

Both issues are involved here, and its pains me that people can't at least try to see both sides. Sure, both sides have valid points, and I don't know which side is right... but there are two sides here to consider.

I found an article talking about five other controversial renditions of the national anthem:

JohnLSU, I am not really understanding where you are going with this... Are you saying that someone is trying to pass a law making this type of thing illegal? Are you advocating passing or not passing such a law? I'm not really sure what you are trying to say. Can you clarify?
