winter is just code for white. these are white people olympics. so we can win in something and feel better about ourselves. even if not a real sport. the black games are the summer. you know, the actual sports. if they removed the xgames from our white people olympics, we'd finish pretty low overall.
Sport, competition yes that is debatable. Not to get on a soap box here but I in general have issues with anything being Judged a sport. I hate Soccer with a passion but its a sport, because someone wins and someone loses solely on merit. Sure you can introduce the entire Ref theory in football. technically they are "judging" but I just cannot get into anything that is 100% judged like Figure Skating or Snowboard Pipe thing. Its an opinion. Like the Mogul thing earlier this Olympics. There was a time component but most of it was decided on what some people thought about their silly little flips and how they "moguled". Just seemed silly to me as I couldnt see any difference between one guy and the next. But Curling. I consider that a competition. Sure it requires almost NO athletic ability (like Bowling) BUT it requires skill, competition and strategy. Hence to me a sport. Its you against someone else. Or luge, where you are racing against time. I even get into Nordic Combine. Ski Jump, and racing. Good stuff. Note : Although on Bowling I have a new found respect. I went bowling with the family a few weeks ago and I was sore for 3 days. Of course I like to throw the ball as hard as I can.... I am sure this will spark debate. But I personally cannot call anything that is judged a sport, sure it requires athletic ability. But so does Ballet......... Sport to me is competing against something (time, distance, etc) or someone... Thats just me..... My neighbor told me once. "My daughter competes in the sport of Cheerleading" I said "Hate to break it to you, but she doesnt compete and its not a sport" She is in the activity of Cheerleading. Sure its hard, requires ability but its not a sport nor do you compete. Needless to say he didnt take to kindly to that... As for the Luge. Yes I know, but I have to do it. It has been calling me since I was a kid. I want a full run, 80-90mph. If I die, I got out how I wanted in a hail of glory...
careful with lumping everything into the same leotards. boxing/mma outcomes are often subjective. definitely sports.
WEll true... Good point. But in Boxing or MMA you could technically knock the person out. Hence you win. So there IS an element of true sport. And there is scoring like Punches landed etc. So that I can almost see since in theory you could knock the person out or have them Tap out. As where in Figure Skating or Snowboard Pipe there is no chance of that, unless someone falls down. Its completely subjective....
Please tell me that someone saw the German pairs skating?!? My wife was watching the "activity" of skating in the other room when she screams out, "The German guy is popping a chubby!!" Sure enough, on international TV, this German guy was really excited about what he was doing. I would post a pic, but the search is probably NSFW.
You know to be honest seeing some German dude dressed in sequins and tassels (who to be honest is probably a 95% chance he DOESNT like women) with a wood will probably make me throw up in my mouth a little bit. I'll pass ;-)
thats a funny word to look at. and its only one letter away from leopards. wonder if they are related in origin. when is the spelling bee on espn. too much coffee? deep thoughts by jack bauer
for me, a game has to have direct competition with a competitor to be a sport. all this timing and measuring and judging stuff just measures who is the most skilled. give the skiers sticks then call it a sport.
is Autoracing a sport then? It requires more physical ability than a curler and is direct competition. How bout card games? For me a sport has to have more emphasis on physical ability/talent than it does on strategy. So... Not a sport: card games, curling, autoracing (requires endurance but is mainly strategy)
According to Dictionary.com Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. even more confused now because athletic activity and fishing dont seem to jive....
