1. Actually, as an Big Ten outsider, I agree completely. The SEC has enough top level programs that any given year one or two, sometimes three have a real shot at winning it all.
Of late (last 4 years using that schedule thingy at espn), the SEC team that has really stood out, with probably the least to show for it, is Georgia. Their loss to WV was the first time they had lost to another OOC team from a BCS auto-qualifying conference in 10 tries... they are 9-1.
There's only three schools in the country who can compare... USC has gone 12-2 and tOSU is also 9-1. Texas, for example, is only 6-2 in that span.

Unfortunately, LSU is the only other SEC team that has a winning record against other BCS auto leagues in the past four years. You're 5-3. The rest are either .500 or worse... and this, imo, is why the media isn't as pumped about the league as they have been in the past.

And before you blast me... we have to listen to this media crap every year, too!
  2. And let me add... I think the addition of Spurrier and Meyer to your coaching ranks will fair much better for the league over the next few years then the Big Ten adding Zook... and letting Carr hang around.
Who's coaching where has a lot to do with things, imo.
  3. That makes sense, but LSU does have MSU and Vandy, although I think both of their coaches are very good, just in almost no win situations at their schools. I think Johnson is a very, very good coach and I am surrpised he took the Vandy job instead of waiting things out at Navy until he got a better offer. I think Sly took the MSU job simply because he was so pissed off at Bama for hiring Shula over him.

LTVF, I'm leaning to your thinking as far as the top level teams in the NCAA being very, very close and having a bunch of teams grouped together at the top, maybe even at least 3 one loss teams putting the BCS in turmoil once again.

Wouldn't surrpise me to see Texas and OU both have one loss since they would not have to face each other in the Big 12 championship game Both have potential losses in early OOC games though. tOSU has a fairly easy run in the Big 10 with Iowa as there big obstacle, Iowa misses Penn St and Mich St but has a big road matchup with Mich.

USC is in the PAC and it will depend on which teams out there step up and of course the Irish will be really pumped and looking for revenge for the past 4 years, especially last season's heartbreaker. Seems like at least one team jumps up every year in the PAC and becomes a contender, Cal has lots of talent on the offensive side of the ball, a great HC who has learned part of the W. Virginia spread to incorporate into his already good offensive system, so maybe they can step up and challenge the Ducks and USC. Oregon could lose to only USC and be the team that knocks OU out of the title picture if the Sooners were to get beat by Texas as well. And for some reason I keep thinking that the Ducks are usually a fast starter coming out of the gate. Can ASU pick up where they were early in the season last year, up until the USC game, or will they continue playing like they did at the end of their schedule, I think they will start off like gang busters again but may have too many holes to plug on their D.

In the ACC I'm not expecting it to be quite as hard to get through the regualr season and ACC title game with just one loss as in the SEC, but Miami has to play FSU & Va Tech in the regular season and FSU would most likely have to play Miasmi again or Va Tech in the title game in addition to their season ender at Florida. Va Tech appears to be the team most likely to have only one losss coming out of the ACC if they are a very good team.

In the Big East, Louisiville has only 2 really hard games looking at the schedules right now, with Miami playing in Kentucky and then they also get to host W. Virginia. Meanwhile the Mountaineers have one bonafide really tough game on theirm entire schedule, traveling to Louisiville.

In the SEC, I think there are several teams that are capable of getting on a super roll and ending with just one loss, depends if any of them get hot on both sides of the ball, but all will have several giant challenges.
  4. Agreed. A criticism of the SEC used to be great athletes, but only decent coaching. The recent hires have all been quite good (Orgeron remains to be seen, but atleast he can recruit - that is until he gets caught by the NCAA).
  5. The SEC will not be down this year or any year in the near future.
I'm not saying the SEC is never down but it doesn't happen often in football.
Everytime I see threads like this I think about the similar thread that was
    started during basketball season.

Not to change the subject but was the SEC down last year in basketball?
The obvious answer is no, it was up last year.
  6. When was the SEC seen as having only decent coaching? I'd have to say that whoever believed that to be true must have been looking at very short time frames as overall as far back as I can remember there were great coaches littered throughout the SEC.
  7. The SEC has had some great coaches, but overall - the league in general has had many good programs with only mediocre coaching.
