He made this assertion when appointing scientists to his cabinet. It specifically pertains to things like the teaching of evolution, stem cell research, and the environment. How did you miss this? It was pretty big news, and not vague in the least. I would agree with the first part, but you've grossly underestimated how much more they hate us now. That's why I said 'benevolent superpower.' Before the last administration, they hated us, but respected us and knew that they should be grateful to us. Now it's just hate with no respect. Will republicans ever learn to look past the politics of this situation, and recognize its necessity? Nitpicking to this degree is generally indicative of a weak argument. However, 10% of his ideas are a lot better than 10% of McCain's. Well, that's actually where you're wrong. I was all over him for caving to the FISA deal. I wasn't around FSA much during that time, but trust that I gave him his fair share of flack for it. It's a pretty big issue to me, and I was extremely let-down that he caved. Deep down, however, I'm just hoping it was him pandering to the public's overblown national security fears. What president has ever not taken the stance that government is the answer? Seems pretty self-defeating, if you ask me. Exactly. See previous point about science. He's intelligent enough to understand that many lessons will be learned along the way, and I honestly don't believe that he'll be too stubborn to admit it when he's wrong. That was Bush's biggest downfall, and don't think the mistake has gone unnoticed.
Until there is an earthquake or tsunami, then the countries who hate us will cry to us for aid. And the aid will come, as usual. Indonesia hated our guts in December of '04, but they certainly didn't mind any American aid that came their way. But they hated us before, then, and now (and probably forever.) Two years ago, I had a student who wanted to write an essay about how much more other nations hated America in 2007 than they did during previous administrations. So, she researched it--and found very little to write about.
And he has already promised to double foreign aid to all these countries that hate us. What a wonderful way to spend our tax dollars.
"What president has ever not taken the stance that government is the answer? Seems pretty self-defeating, if you ask me." That one is EASY. Ronald Reagan...... Here are some quotes My favorite "Government isnt the solution to our problems, government IS the problem" "Man is not free unless government is limited" "No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! " "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help" "The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much. " "Governments tend not to solve problems, only to rearrange them" "Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty" "Entrepreneurs and their small enterprises are responsible for almost all the economic growth in the United States" "Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them" "Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves. " "Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other"
Obama is already causing me grief. He is going to reverse the Mexico Policy. It makes me ill that my tax dollars will be going overseas to pay for abortions.
Naive, eh? Ok. But I'm not the one who thinks that invading Iraq was a good idea... No offense, but I don't typically look to grade schoolers (or whatever grade you teach) for insight on global opinions. Besides, one would be very hard-pressed to quantify such a topic, anyway. If it's not obvious that global opinions have taken a hit since the invasion of Iraq, then you just simply refuse to acknowledge it.
But many of us, including myself could give two Sh!ts what France thinks of us. We should recues ourselves from the UN, then throw them out of New York. I guess i am curious why we are so worried what "The Global opinion" is. I mean I am always amused that France hates us yet if it wasn’t for us would be speaking German right now. I also don’t recall anyone but the Brits standing side by side with us when WE face adversity. Those jerks sit on the fence and judge. F every single one of them. I guess America has DONE MORE THEN ENOUGH. To show we are committed to the global community, the COUNTLESS men and women who have DIED on foreign lands proves that. We are from Louisiana go visit the D-Day museum in New Orleans That my friend is all the "Global Opinion" we need...... I don’t think the US owes ANYONE an explanation for ANYTHING we do. Just get the hell out of the way..... We should become on isolationist country as far as I am concerned. This country needs NO ONES approval to protect itself. I dont recall ANY country helping dig out during 9-11. Yeh thanks for the flowers. Now excuse us while we kindly retort.... Sure some have helped in Iraq and other locations. Yes thanks for the breakfast and the ride to the battlefront.... England is our only true ally. The rest blowhards. Yeh I am one of those "Arrogant Americans" save yourself the post....
Fair enough. But a) Raegan's laissez-faire approach does not seem to be as good of a fit with regards to some of our currently pressing issues, and b) the size of the government has increased dramatically in the past 8 years.
