I thought the schools voted on where it would be, and that Auburn always votes with the east for location purposes.
Obvious Well they play in a Dome because of the weather. Knoxville is 3 to 4 hours from Atlanta Gainsville is 4 to 5 hours from Atlanta Uga is 1 hour from Atlanta Auburn is 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Atlanta Tuscaloosa is 4 to 5 hours from Atlanta Miss State is 5 hours from Atlanta South Carolina is 3 to 4 hours from Atlanta Arkansas is forever away Baton Rouge is around 7 to 8 hours away UK, Ole Miss and Vandy dont matter because they never get there anyway. But other then a couple Atlanta is pretty good place to have the game. If the game was in New Orleans it would be a lot further for the teams north of Atlanta to get to New Orleans then for LSU to go to Atlanta. If Memphis had a Dome then Memphis would be a good place for the game.
Jetstorm, Your idea makes too much sense. When is the last time Roy Kramer did anything that made sense? Kinda like the 3 way tie in the east and how they tried to fix it in a hurry to save thier own face. Weather?????? Football is meant to play in the weather no matter how bad it is. Do we have a bunch of babies playing out there anymore?? Anyway basketball is meant to play indoors not football in my opinion.
I remember hearing one of the reasons that New Orleans wasnt selected, and probably will not be, is because of the SEC's affiliation with New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl. If the SECC game were in New Orleans, the winning teams fans would be returning there in just a few weeks for the bowl game. So I think because of that, they might not have as many travelling fans, since some may not want to make a second trip in only a few weeks. I cant really remember how big a factor that was, but I do remember reading that somewhere.
That sums it up well. SEC loves Atlanta with the Hotels, Walking distance from A-B, ext....and the revenue seems to increase every year.
Article in todays paper reads: "GEORGIA HOME GAME?" "Atlanta Dome hardly neutral playing field" A year ago UGA won its 1st SEC championship in 20 seasons, cheered by a bunch of dawg fans who transformed the Georgia Dome into a replica of their home stadium, the only thing missing were the hedges. The dawgs are back in Atlanta to defend their title playing LSU in a home game that raises questions about the SEC deciding its football champion every year in Atlanta, about a 1 hour drive from the UGA campus. "I think something should be considered in the future," coach Nick Saban said."It would probably be a little more equitable to find another site that was suitable." Saban suggested New Orleans. But the game wont be going anywhere soon. The SEC is locked into the Georgia Dome thru 2009. An SEC official cites a huge airport, nonstop flights, and plenty of hotel rooms as the reason the Georgia dome plays host every year. 7 of the SEC's 12 schools are located within Georgia and 4 adjoining states. Only Arkansas and LSU feel a bit left out. UGA is content with the current arrangement. Last year the dawgs routed Arkansas with at least 3/4's of the 75,000 fans rooting for the home state team, it should be more of the same Saturday night. Coach Richt says its a great advantage for UGA. It wasn't much of an issue until now, UGA never reached the game for the 1st decade of its existence, which meant the site was about as neutral as possible.
Nothing can be done until the contract runs out. Until such time, LSU fans need to do what many other SEC fans have been doing for years ... try to buy your SECCG tickets directly from the SEC office well in advance. Here's the site to add your name to next year's waiting list ... the dealine for applying is December 31st. http://southtix.cust.tbred.com/event.tbred?page=maillist&event=secinfo
