As much as people like to dismiss it, it's there. Plus the recruits see CW much differently than the average fan. Their facilities are top notch, they are on TV every weekend, they have lots of Heismans. All of those things look pretty good if you are honest about it plus think of the opportunities to make a difference with a struggling program.
Here ya go. ‘03 #1 LSU #2 Florida ‘04 #1 USC #2 LSU ‘05 #1 USC #2 FSU ‘06 #1 USC #2 Florida ‘07 #1 Florida #2 USC Funny how those #1 and #2 teams show up in the NC games or one game out, year in and year out. LSU was a game out last year and so was USC. Each played in the NC game twice, difference being we won both but the one they lost was down to the wire. Pretty amazing connection tween recruiting and year-end ranking.
And luck, and avoiding injuries, etc. Yes, USC has 1 NC in the BCS era and that has caused consternation among the Trojan faithful. Plenty of fans feel like underachievement has been the case. But it's hard to go along with that considering the big picture. I'd like to win multiple NC's but I recognize how hard that is and the fact that we've been to the Big Dance 2x since 2003 and just missed on it 2 other times, tells me we are regularly in the hunt. No way has the recruiting effort been a waste. When you get to the point of saying that it's either a NC or failure, expectations are out of whack.
I think with ND, it's a combination of good recruiters, the chance to play early AND on TV all the freaking time, and a very good shot at a BCS bowl if they have a decent season. The school's tradition cannot be underestimeated, or their facilities, campus, or the quality of the education. As an aside, I can't believe that some people think we did poorly in recruiting out-of-state players when we got the #5 player nationally out of Florida when all of the Florida schools and USC offered for him. And we did it without a defensive coordinator in place. With a head coach who is not a defensive guru. :dis:
