why fly the confederate flag in the first place?

    heritage?
    history?
    allegence to the south?

I think its ignorant and silly to still be flying a flag that the majority of the country feels that is closely identified with african american slavery.

why would anyone have this flag up on a campus with many african american slave decendants?

Lack of respect and total ignorance.

    this is a beaten issue.

if you really want a "other-than-mindful" reason to not fly the flag: just look at recruiting. You think many black kids are going to want to come to a school with those kind of flags hanging up???? in school colors???

WTF.... LSU can do better than that...

Confederate flags are entirely appropriate at places like Civil War battlefields and forts, Confederate cemetaries, Veterans monuments, museum exhibits, reenactments, and historical displays like at Galvez Plaza where all ten national flags that have flown over Louisiana are flown including the Confederate flag. They are not only appropriate it would be historical censorship to NOT display them.

It is also appropriate to fly a confederate flag over ones own home if one feels a need to make some kind of a personal statement. I fly one on Confederate memorial day because Confederate veterans are not honored on Memorial Day or buried in National Cemetaries.

It is inappropriate to publicly display them as hate symbols, racist icons, or whatever the hell the purple-and-gold-confederate-flag-flying people think they are doing displaying them at LSU football games. Such people should go to Ole Myth.

Wow. Even if I weren't posting in between doing work, and having to write a little bit at a time, therefore scattering my thoughts...

...I don't think I could have written down what I think/feel on the issue any better than this.

And Red, I agree completely with your post as well. I never said the flag should not be flown where appropriate. I have no problem with it being flown in the historical setting. The Confederacy is part of my heritage too. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a descendent of Jefferson Davis (for the historically challenged like Salty, that's the President of the Confederacy), so I would never want to disrespect my and our ancestory. I don't think it's appropriate to fly the flag in public places such as on LSU campus. If it were 1 obnoxious person doing it, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but that flag seems to be gaining in popularity, and it's just sad to me that so many people have a lack of respect for all the black students. It's also incredibly ironic to me that so many young white guys would spend so much time and money to go watch and support these black athletes, but at the same time fly a flag that those very athletes consider insulting and degrading.

I think arguments about fat people in bikinis are ridiculous. None of us white folk could ever imagine what it feels like to be a black person. I used to defend the personal flying of the confederate flag as much as anyone. I actually used to wear a confederate flag pin on my jean jacket in high school, when I went to McKinley (so Salty, before you say I don't have balls, think about that one a little bit).

And arguments about what rights and liberties are being trampled (or trambled as some might say) on are irrelevant to me. To me it's a simply matter of respect...something that evidently a lot of posters on here don't have and don't care to have. If more people just had a little more respect for others we wouldn't be having this discussion about rights to fly a flag.

The closest parallel I can think of would be college students in Germany flying a Swastica at a university with a large Jewish population. It's not exactly the same, but it's pretty close. Most reasonable people would see that as pretty tasteless. To me, what's going on here is not much different.

So then how do you call posters here ignorant, and then refuse to support those assertions? Is that not ridiculous?

Again, you fail to draw the distinction about the right to fly the flag and the actual flying of said flag. If you don't understand the difference, that's fine. Just don't assume everybody on here wants to fly the flag when that's not what they're saying.

I think I know what you're talking about, but I don't remember exactly. I'll try to look it up when I have some time. Now I'm curious.

I thought about it, and have still come to the conclusion that you, sir, have no balls.
