i dont see why you cant tell the difference between a symbol and what it stands for.

and so what if somebody hates what the flag stands for? people are stupid, they hate all manner of things that are good. buring the flag is just a way of saying "i am sick of america in some way", which is fine. in fact i am sick of america in a few ways myself.

another question is why i am talking about this here and not the flag burning thread. i should be burned in effigy.

First of all let me just say that I appreciate and respect everyone serving in our armed forces, including you and Salty. Yesterday got pretty heated and I just want to make that clear.

However, from the above statement I gather that this all comes down to misunderstanding. Here's what I mean. I'm a white American male, and the sight of the Confederate flag doesn't bother me at all. However burning the American flag greatly offends me because it is a symbol of the greatness of this wonderful country I call home and of the freedoms and rights that we all hold dear (exept for Martin evidently). Burning the flag insults me as a proud American because it insults this nation that grants me the freedoms and rights that I possess.

Just try for a second to think about this. For our black friends and neighbors the Confederate flag is insulting in much the same way, because it represents a time when they did not have those freedoms and rights that make us so great. The majority of them were slaves having no rights at all, and the free blacks hardly received the freedoms and rights of the whites.

You can say it's completely different all you want, but it's really not. It all comes down to what it means to us as individuals, and to having respect for one another.

I don't believe flag-burners are traitors, nor do I believe that flag burning should be banned. I simply think that flag burning is:

    1. Constitutionally protected free speech, which is important to preserve,

    2. That it also happens to be collectively and personally insulting to most Americans, and

    3. That it is a foolish activity that causes widespread animosity and fails to gain support for whatever is being protested. Any cause that requires flag-burning is going nowhere.

I'm not overly sensitive, or insecure or black.

    0 for 3.

    Better try again.

Your inflated sense of self-importance on this matter is getting in the way of rationality. If you were not offended, the thread isn't about you. If you were offended, then you are AT LEAST two of the above three.

It would take more than that to offend me, but seeing as how I'm the only one that took the position I did early in this thread (until CParso got involved) then trying to say you weren't referring to me is a weak attempt to avoid admitting that you were wrong.

I'm violating my rule about arguing with fools, but I can't resist.

I don't know why I would admit to being wrong. I'm always happy to admit I'm wrong when I am, because it's such a rare occurrence.

I said people shouldn't be offended, and if they are, then they're insecure in their own abilities and talents. That's absolutely true, and it hasn't been proven otherwise. It's really not all that complicated. Your best retort was saying that I would not react in the logical way, which is hardly a rebuttal.

The discussion then shifted to whether the flag should be banned, and again, I was right as usual. Of course it shouldn't be banned.

The discussion then shifted to burning the US flag, and again, my position is flawless, though more entertainingly enunciated by martin.

we have an "LSU" flag already, we have a team mascot, and colors, etc, etc..

The rebel flag has absolutely no place in LSU football. Why stir the pot and start crap, just to f**king do it?

    Idiotic.

Get a life "rebel flag wavers", or better yet, move to Oxford, Miss

We've been flying the purple and gold Confederate flag down there since you were in the first grade. This isn't something new. No one has made a stink about it until recently. Don't you worry about us, you just study hard and get that degree little freshman. Go back to the Den, we are having adult conversation down here.
