Why doesn't Miles get credit as a great coach with the national media?

The debate seems to be whether Miles is a great coach, or does he happen to be the coach of a great program/team?

So for which aspects of coaching should we give Miles credit for being great?

    - recruiting?
    - Xs and Os?
    - position skills/technique?
    - discipline?
    - motivation, morale?
    - public image?
    - organizational skills?
    - staff development?
    - game management?

    - any others?

So for which aspects of coaching should we give Miles credit for being great?

    - recruiting? .................................No doubt
    - Xs and Os? ................................Can't have 4 loses in two years in the sec without "X's" and "O's"
    - position skills/technique ...............O line has improved, defense as good as there is in the Nation.
    - discipline ...................................No player problems in two yrs.
    - motivation, morale ......................Not sure.....What he accomplished through huricane aftermath makes me stongly lean towards yes but because of Fla. and Ole Miss games not completely sure but ND game will tell a lot since we are hearing even the USC fans say we're going to put a beat down on 'em.
    - public image ..............................Great public image as a person but probably not the "Coach's personna" that most look for.
    - organizational skills......................No knowledge to dispute so I'll give him credit and assume college football coaches don't get to that level without that quality.
    - staff development?.....................Too vague of a criteria.
    - game management......................I'm sure some will penalize him here but if they stood with him during the game and not with hindsight they'd give him this one- Overall....I am.

    - any others? I'd add Player rapport -which could fall under morale- in which case definitely a plus for Miles.

I'm no expert but I would have liked to see more of a stand on consistency with who was in the backfield but I'm not privy to information as to how he came to those decisions and there may have been good reasons......obviously had KW been cleared earlier he might have had more choices but, as much as I hate to say this, I felt JV was done early on in the year- no knock on him cause probably the injury and appreciate his contributions- I have a framed poster of him in my outdoor kitchen.

I also thought he stayed with the run game too much in the Auburn game but someone, maybe red, later pointed out the play selection and it was much more balanced than I had realized (I don't remember and don't know how to obtain individual game stats so I'll leave it at that).

This man didn't win the "Big game" either but he is, by many expert's opinion, the QB best to have played, glad they didn't use that logic and still inducted him to the Hall of Fame. Not apples and oranges either......same principle.

One of the things I wanted to see in Saban's replacement was a contentment coaching college football and the college sports environment in general with no real desire to go to the NFL. I had that feeling with Miles when it was announced he would be LSU's new head coach. I thought Saban liked coaching at the college level and recruiting. Boy was I wrong.
But to be honest, I also had that feeling with Saban.

It seems to me that Miles is more content in the college ranks than Saban. It seemed Nick just got here and he was listening to NFL offers. I think Les could offer us something we've wanted for a long time, and very good head coach who does not have wanderlust. The only thing that may temp him is the "going home" syndrome to his alma mater at Michigan. Then again, you don't have to shovel much snow in Baton Rouge! He may not leave even for Michigan after he has his program running here.

I think that last play was more of an execution istake thana coaching one. If you're a player, and you know this is the last play the other team has, you shouldn't need to be coached on how to play that last play.

Who knows, maybe I put more emphasis on player execution than coaching...I've been "accused" of that by a few...

Good point. I played DB in High School. It was hammered into our heads pretty extensively to "knock the ball DOWN" , and when in the prevent defense, "NO ONE gets behind you". So to think the DB's in that game didn't know better is probably a dumb idea.

I disagree in this instance. The fact is LSU did not have enough DBs in the game at the time. You are right about the execution on a player level, but LSU should have had more DBs playing deep in case there was a breakdown in coverage. The WR beat the DB then had a clean run to the end zone. IMO that is soley on coaching and is inexcusable. As much as I like Muschamp he is also a lot to blame.

Take your purple and gold glasses off. The rest of the country knows it is talent that is winning games for LSU not Les Miles coaching. You can certainly tell even with his record that he isn't a good coach talent just hides the fact. Everybody else knows he is a joke as a head coach. You ever heard of Larry Coker people?

I'm going to use SabanFan's line here since he is probably unwrapping presents- since he was such a good boy this year Santa had to pass early to lighten the load with all those gifts he had for SF.

Tell me which coaches win without talent??

    Say What! 4 losses in two years......in the SEC???

I doubt I'll persuade you so Merry Christmas all the same. :thumb:
