Because you are a part of it (atleast for some of us). I never watched any sports growing up. My dad couldn't get me to sit down & watch a football game with him to save his life, but my senior year of high school I came to an LSU football game while trying to decide where to go to college & have loved LSU football ever since. And once you get into it for your own school, you have to start paying attention to your opponents and things like that until it eventually grows into a following of the whole league. Atleast, that's how it worked for me.

Because of the traditions. The band. The stadiums. Also the fact that you know LSU will forever remain in Baton Rouge...they're not going to up and move the team to say, San Antonio.
