so was Hester a redshirt in 03? How can Mauck pass down a jersey to a guy that isn't on the team when he is?

Mauck was a freshman in 2000 and redshirted that year.

Hester came in 2004

no, he was still in High School in '03.
hell, have no clue, just what I read in multiple articles that came ot when Dickson changed his number

yeah but Mauck left after the national championship. So Hester and Mauck were never on the same team together right? What am i missing here?

Hester never redshirted.

Mauck and Hester knew each other from Hester's recruitment and Mauck spent time at LSU working out over the summer at LSU getting ready for the NFL which is the same time the freshman were reporting to campus.

Here is more on the new tradition. Miles, Matt, Hester, and Dickson will all have a say at who gets the number.

Perhaps the most tangible sign of Dickson’s leadership role, however, is his jersey number. After wearing number 82 for two years, he inherited the 18 jersey that was passed down from Matt Mauck to Jacob Hester.

“We have a tradition where we switch jerseys for the last practice before the bowl game, and Jacob and I switched,” he said. “We started messing around with Coach Miles about it because we didn’t really think he was going to let me switch my number. I showed up in the spring, and my locker was changed to number 18. When people like that want you to wear their number, it’s a great accomplishment.”

At the end of the season, Dickson plans on choosing the new recipient of the jersey after talking with Mauck and Hester.

“We talk about it all the time and it’s going to be a group decision. We have to sit down and figure it out, but we definitely want to keep the tradition and pass it on to someone else,” he said.

In the end though, it’s not the numbers in the record book or on his jersey that matter most to Dickson.

“I want to be remembered,” he said, pausing, “as a player who did what it took to win.”

Its not the number, its the person who wears it. You can give a football player any number you want. It has no bearing on how gifted they are or how many plays they make in a game to help a team be successful.

Would Billy Cannon have been any less successful if the number on his jersey was different from #20? Absolutely not.
