Curley was the coach when I saw my first few games on TV, but DiNardo was the coach when I really became a fan. I remember when he was hired. He said something about - there are enough really good kids in the state of LA to field a really strong football team and that he'd do his best to keep all the best kids in state. At the time (mid 80's - mid 90's), LA 2-5A was the dominant 5A football district in the state, but you go back and look at LSU's rosters and you'd rarely find a kid from Ouachita, Neville, West Monroe, Ruston or Bastrop. Not sure why, but not many NE LA kids were going to LSU. DiNardo really tried to recruit NE LA kids, and so I will say Coach DiNardo. :crystal::geauxtige:crystal::geauxtige:crystal::geauxtige
Great thread. I became aware of LSU football during the NC season of 58 under Dietzel. I was 9. My first game attended was against George Mira and the Miami Hurricanes in 63. Cholly Mac was the coach then. The last game I attended was UAB.
Been to games since I was a tot but the first one that I can actually remember was against Rice in '77 under Mac. We beat them 77-0 and for some reason, I thought all our games were supposed to be such wide margins! My first game as a student was '86 vs Texas A&M, Arnsparger's last year.
I'm 45 this month. Started with Cholly Mac as a 12-13 year old. Really started following in earnest around 78' Charles Alexander, Steve Ensminger, Woodley, Lyman White, Kelly Simmons, Carlos Carson, etc. been a fan(atic) ever since, it's a birthright!!
