I know he is in vogue because of the recent film, but I'd have to put Alan Turing on this list. The greatest change of the last century has been automation brought about by computers.

Jack Kilby. First to make an intergrated circuit. He is worth a mention.

I was wondering if someone would be ballsy enough to say Bin Laden. You're absolutely correct though.

OBL is more of a 21st century character. He was the symbol of radical Islam but beyond symbolism his actual influence waned after the US invasion of Afghanistan.
As to Tesla, Turing, Einstein etc they weren't prime movers. If you want to make a case for a private person I would put Henry Ford up above the rest.
On the public side FDR was great maybe the greatest US citizen of the century but his accomplishments pale compared to Churchill's who was important for almost 2/3rds of the century. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1901, took his first cabinet level post in 1908. Was First Loard of the Admiralty at the start of WWI, led a battalion in the trenches, came back to be Minister of Munitions at the end. He negotiated the independence of Ireland as Home Secratary, was Chancellor of the Exchequer before the depression and of course everyone knows his greatest effort standing alone against Hitler for2+ years. After the war he served twice as PM again and stayed in Parliment until his death in 1964.
No other person in the world spanned the century as he did.
