I was there! But I was on the field. My parents and friends were in the left field bleachers though. Not only did the seats leave a lot to be desired- so did the guys performance.
Do a search on this topic and you'll find a half dozen threads already posted and a hundred opinions. Here is what I think: LSU had a traditional in-state rival for many decades--Tulane. There was "The Rag" whch went to the annual winner and many pranks like Tulane students painting Mike the Tiger green or LSU students seeding "LSU" in rye grass in Tulane stadium timed to come up the morning of the game. But Tulane then quit the SEC and got really bad in football (25 straight losses to LSU) and we eventually had to drop them as an annual opponent. They just don't qualify anymore as a traditional rival--except in baseball maybe. No, since Tulane's abdication of the rivalry, LSU's main rival has been whoever stood between LSU and the SEC championship. In the 60's it was Ole Miss. It was Bama in the 70's and 80's. In the 1990's it was Florida and in the 21st century it has been Auburn. At least so far. Georgia is lining up to be the contender of the future, possibly.
I'd like to see LaTech as a future rival of LSU. We're the only team left that has anything to offer, I think. It was probably the worst game I've ever seen the Dawgs play in my life when we came down a couple years ago, but you gotta admit, there were a LOT of us at the game. Right now, we're working out a deal to play you early this coming season, instead of our currently scheduled home game with crappy North Texas. That would be a cool rivalry mainly because 95% of Tech fans HATE LSU.. (I don't though ), and the game would be like North vs. South. Anyway, just throwin' in my two cents.
What is sad is the fact that we don't have one rival for every sport. Football - I really don't think we have a true rival we just hate everybody. Baseball - Tulane Basketball - Mississippi State
I'm surprised that no one said Arkansas in Football. Isn't there some sort of, "Golden Bootee," rivalry? http://www.1122productions.com/rivalries/a.html#a12 And I just noticed the, "rag rivalry." Wouldn't gold, purple and green amount to the colors used on most traditional Mardi Gras flags?
That's a burdgeoning rivalry, but just not enough to be the big football rivalry. The Arkansas game has the potential of being a tough match up every year, and can have big time SEC West champ implications. But in the end...we're talking about Arkansas. They're not Bama, Auburn, Florida or Ole Miss!
