I read an article today at ESPN.com where Spurrier was quoted as saying that he would talk to Foley about the job. I'm not really sure he would go back, but there is a slim chance it can happen.
They ran an interview with him from today on Sportscenter. Spurrier in no way expressed dis-interest in the job. He more or less left the door wide open.... :cuss:
It wouldn't bother me if Spurrier when back, but I tend to think anything that gets FL fans excited can't be a good thing. :thumb: My other comment is . . . would Stoops really leave OU? I don't think he will, even if FL drives a dump truck full of money to his house. Sure, the job is very attractive in a recruiting rich state . . . but OU isn't exactly a crap team in a non-football state. He doesn't need FL to improve his resume. I know this . . . the next FL coach will be a "name" coach, I seriously doubt they will go the Zook route again. The fan base will certainly demand more this time around.
I just can't see Stoops leaving OU right now - I just don't see how any coach would or could turn their backs and walk away with a kid like Adrian Peterson on campus. The kid is that good. I imagine that there is a feeling associated with special players like that and coaches as accomplished as Bob Stoops can see the tremendous opportunities a kid like that will provide. Stoops has one of those once in a lifetime recruits and I just don't see him turning his back on that and all the other great things at OU right now...
UF would be bound to honor the contract, but it would likely be a formality since the bull gators were primarily behind the move to oust Zook.... they would easily buy the contract out. Foley was intelligent enough to recognize that he was the one that would be caught holding the bag in the event the Zook issue simmered any longer. Spurrier is reported by AP as stating he's interested in discussions with Foley. Spurrier and Foley kissed and made up more than a year ago and have remained in contact weekly since. The job is Spurrier's if he wants it, but Dan Lebatard is reporting that Wayne Huizenga is reportedly interested in Spurrier for the Dolphins job. IMHO, CSS is done with the pro circuit. You must commit to the run in the NFL, and the players egos in the NFL are even bigger than Spurrier's - if that's possible. Let it be known though that not all the bull gators were as forgiving as AD Foley. Petrino is a terrific gameplanner, talent developer, and adjust-on-the-fly Coordinator ---- and he's a solid student of the game. He was greatly missed by Auburn in 2003 as an OC, but easily replaced in 2004. IMO, Borges is better because he is trusted by his players. Petrino won't get it. UF's going to get someone with a little more experience as an HC, maybe even at a big program. Stoops has already turned it down the last go 'round. Why would he consider leaving a perrenial favorite, at a quality program where he's beginning to settle in? No, I don't think it will be Stoops.
no reason Stoops would take that job except to live in florida. He knows he has that conference practically locked up as Spurrier did the SEC for some time. Why come to the hell of the SEC? No one will ever have another Spurrier-esque run unless a handful of teams defect. If Spurrier was to take the UT job then that would be something though I have no belief thay SOS would take that job. Now Zook is out, Spurrier will not deny any job offer per any agent's advice to let the bidding wars begin. He should take the Duke job, show up on Thursday's after golf and ask his QB again what his name is and go from there as he tells those boring special teams and defensive players/coaches to go to the other side of the room. I also don't think they will hire Petrino either though I certainly don't think Auburn is better off without him after a half year with Borges....that's a definite glass 3/4 full view. Let me know how you feel at the end of next year.
I think it's gonna be Spurrier. These are the reasons: 1. He is the fan and alumni favorite. 2. He's an alum and Heisman winner from UF. 2. He's unemployed. 3. He seems to want the job. If Foley doesn't hire him, he is setting himself up to be fired if the new guy doesn't win big. Foley and Spurrier will come to an understanding, and the Visor will be back on the sideline in '05.
I don't think that will be a problem because if the next FL coach isn't SOS, then it will be explained in great detail why he isn't the next coach. Foley will have that in his pocket, so that is yet another way he can cover his ass. After reading a ton of articles today, seeing the coverage on TV, and checking out the FL boards today . . . I assume SOS is coming back, if not then we will all know the reason for it.
