Before the 17th amendment the representative and the senator served different purposes. The Representative was accountable to his district while the senator was the represenative of the state government. The popular election of senators put an end to that as their constituency changed. Also popular elected Senators are not doing the will of the people anyway. If they were the bank bailouts and the stimulus package would have not made it out of the chamber. Since they are owned anyway why do I care if it is by state legislatures or corporations.
But it didn't change his constituency, which is the people of the state. The entire state votes for senators, so his is a statewide representation. Having him elected by state legislators is a disservice to the state citizenry by removing them from the process. The state senate has its own agenda and we elect those senators to achieve this. A US senator is another matter entirely and too important to leave to legislators.
Totally agree. I caught bits and pieces of the Obama speech tonight and the stupid bitch was leading the standing ovations like a teenage cheerleader. You're the Speaker of the House for gods sake. Show a little decorum.:angryfire
I would love to continue this discussion but I will be kicked off of this site if I actually wrote my true feelings about her. She rivals Blanco as to my tolerance level and i'm sure she will surpass her in the next few months.
Loathe: Murtha* Kennedys Pelosi Nagin *Vladimir Obama is showing tremendous potential to easily get to the top of this list. Dislike: Just about all of the rest of them
