ive been watching football since in the womb. in hi def. my instincts never fail me. * The kick must be a free kick (a kickoff, or free kick after a safety, but not the rare fair catch kick) * The kick must cross the receiving team's restraining line (normally 10 yards in front of the kicking team's line), unless the receiving team touches the ball before that line. * The kicking team may only recover and retain possession of the kicked ball, but not advance it. * The kicking team must not interfere with an attempt by a player of the receiving side to catch the ball on the fly. [1] i suppose that applies here.
it wasn't a muff...he was hit just before it got to him from the replays Ive seen. Or maybe I'm biased since his dad used to work with us.
I'm going to have to lol on that one. I'm afraid that having good hands is not a strong point of our RB corp--as evidenced by Blue not actually catching that ball (but, in all fairness, he was being hit before the ball arrived--it seemed.)
That's what needs to be determined. I don't think that is the case. Looks hokey, but I think it was very legal.
in all fairness, i don't think Jerry Rice would have caught that ball while getting hammered like that.
The kicker drove the ball into the ground. Does that negate the on the fly verbiage? I haven't seen a clear cut answer to what happens if the LSU player ventures into the 10 yard zone. Is he fair game to get drilled?
"on the fly", interesting words here. Sounds like the ball being kicked in the air. But it would appear this should apply to the ball being received by the team in any manner. But Tirk, I know you've seen onside kicks in which a player gets blown up who attempts to get the ball beyond 10 yards and then the kicking team recovers instead. I've never once seen a penalty called on that. Like Stacey said, it's a free-for-all.
Then it could be a flaw in the rule that NC exposed. If you kick it 9 yards and blow up the receiver right before he gets it, have it bounce off him then you have a better chance at getting the recovery. Seems like there is a rule somewhere that states the kick receiver can't be hit before he touches the ball but I could be wrong about that.
also youre not supposed to be able to review a call then throw a flag afterwards. thats what would have happened here if they overturned it. otherwise you could review every play and call holding afterwards.
