Thats why I said "the island", not the buildings... many times people have said "grand isle will be washed away" and it is still there, though smaller each time... those people love that little isle and will rebuild yet again.
Grand Isle was not the first to be hit and was on the western edge of the eye. The mouth of the river at SW pass, Venice, Buras & Port Sulphur were hardest hit as evidenced by the fact that most camps shown had roof damage and were still on their foundations. The old hurricane eye rule "the west side is the best side". Still, I recognize the terrible damage done and those locations in the photo. I was last in Grand Isle in late June.
Also, the top photo shows the jetties still in place. When I went to Grand Isle State Park in June, I made a trip to the pier at the very East end of the Island. You could see pods of dolphins next to the jetties, boats in the fishing fleet going about their business , and a well protected island with a great levee. These pictures are evidence that the levee & jetties did their job and took a "good hit" but not the brunt of this storm. Louisiana must install more of these jetties in Barataria Bay, Breton Sound & Chandeleur Sound along with other programs to save the coast from erosion. They work!
I have a few pictures of grand isle from a fly over it is mostly around pelican point behind the community center because that is where our camp is email me and i will forward them to anyone
