Offensively, I think it depends a lot on how JR performs at QB. We're loaded at the skill positions and solid in the O line. Retaining Jimbo and other offensive coaches was a big plus. I think defensively we will be OK. We've got a lot of starters returning and some solid reserves from last year who are moving into starting positions. As long as the defensive coaches don't try to fix what wasn't broke I think we'll be fine on D. With the talent we have I don't forsee the coaching changes being much of an issue this year. If JR plays up to his potential I think we can run the table. If his performance is up and down like last year then I think we're looking at a two loss season.
The one thing that troubles me is how many close games we could end up having unless JR really is on par with everyone else. I am a bit worried if not VERY worried about whether JR can take the whole load and lead us for an entire year without 2-3 bad games. Can our D perform as it has the last few years?
Obviously, the "diehard fan" in me wants an undefeated season! :thumb: But there's a reason why the SEC is the best conference and most competitive. In an attempt to be objective, and to try to not be too "LSU biased", I'll say the season shapes up like this: 09/03/05North Texas - Baton Rouge, La. WIN 09/10/05ArizonaState - Baton Rouge, La. WIN 09/24/05Tennessee - Baton Rouge, La. WIN 10/01/05MississippiState - Starkville, Miss. WIN 10/08/05 Vanderbilt - Nashville, Tenn. WIN 10/15/05Florida - Baton Rouge, La. LOSS 10/22/05Auburn - Baton Rouge, La. WIN 11/05/05 Appalachian State - Baton Rouge, La. WIN 11/12/05Alabama - Tuscaloosa, Ala. WIN 11/19/05 Ole Miss - Oxford, Miss. WIN 11/26/05Arkansas - Baton Rouge, La. WIN SEC Championship Game WIN
The first three games would tell us a lot about LSU football. The following article is our 1st opponent of the season. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/sun_belt/2005_Previews/NorthTexas_Preview.htm
09/03/05North Texas - Baton Rouge, La. -WIN 09/10/05ArizonaState - Baton Rouge, La. -Should Win 09/24/05Tennessee - Baton Rouge, La. -Should Win 10/01/05MississippiState - Starkville, Miss. -WIN 10/08/05 Vanderbilt - Nashville, Tenn. -WIN 10/15/05Florida - Baton Rouge, La. -PUSH (too hard to guess how good Fl will be right now) 10/22/05Auburn - Baton Rouge, La. -Should Win 11/05/05 Appalachian State - Baton Rouge, La. -WIN 11/12/05Alabama - Tuscaloosa, Ala. -Should Win 11/19/05 Ole Miss - Oxford, Miss. -Should Win 11/26/05Arkansas - Baton Rouge, La. -WIN This season, as pointed far too many times, is going to depend on QB play. More than that it will require a few things to go our way. This may be considered an easy year schedule wise, but we play some very talented teams. Luck will have to be on our side. The season could be anywhere from 8-3 to 11-0, just like last year could have ended up 11-1 or 7-5. We drew down the middle of the road last year. This year I expect luck to be on our side.
I thought Clausen was smart to transfer when he did because he did have potential to be a player, I agree that he had talent. I just can't believe he transferred to Tennessee, where he is more likely to sit the bench than start. I expected him to transfer to a I-AA school, ala Craig Nall, where he could walk in and be a star and get some real attention from NFL scouts.
Sorry, but I don't buy into the "new coach=losses" idea. Larry Coker took over a loaded Miami team from Butch Davis, changed very little in terms of schemes, and won the national title his first year. Year in, year out we see new coaches greatly improve the competitiveness of the teams they inherit (Saban himself took LSU to the Peach Bowl in his first year, after the preceding team had a losing record). It can be done.
