When I was a kid, my dad always had a garden and we would just pull tomatoes or melons and eat them any time they were ripe. The was always a big aluminum salt shaker with a handle in the shed near the garden. I was fond of carrots, too. I would pull one out of the ground and wash it off at the hose, then hold it by its greens and eat it like Bugs Bunny.
Since I was a kid, I always put ketchup on top of my ketchup but never really liked tomatoes until I was an adult. Now, I think bacon and tomatoes are the perfect combination. Since my kids are always requesting grilled cheese sandwiches, my wife has started making me a supreme grilled cheese, which includes an extra slice of cheese (compared to kid's one slice), a fried egg, bacon, tomatoes, grilled onions, and mayo. Other than authentic south La. cuisine (ideally with shrimp and bacon included together - my match made in heaven), the supreme grilled cheese has become one of my favorites.
I'm a purist on grilled cheese sandwiches. Only bread and cheese grilled on a tiny amount of butter. And although I mostly eat and prefer whole wheat bread on sandwiches . . . it really takes white bread to make a top grilled cheese sandwich. But I do like a bacon and egg sandwich with a tomato.
The greatest grilled cheese is with any dense and/or grainy bread with habanero jack cheese. Add bacon and you're in heaven.
