That's what I was working off of. I figured it had something to do with surveying and got lucky. I still think it can be used to look at a solar eclipse. I'll get mine ready.
I am indeed a forester. The crown densiometer has 24 squares on the mirror. You're supposed to imagine each square divided into 4 quadrants, count one for each quadrant that that reflects anything other than open sky and multiply the count by 1.04 to give a percentage of crown canopy closure.
