    How does it work and why does a spoke wrench need a thumbscrew adjustment?

    like a crescent wrench, the thumbscrew sets the width of the jaws. You hook the curved part around the spoke and put the flat jaws on the part attached to the rim.

    Yes, its a surgical tool, no that's not its purpose.
