Caltrop,.. served to slow down the advance of horses, war elephants, and human troops. They were said to be particularly effective against the soft feet of camels. In more modern times, caltrops are used against wheeled vehicles with pneumatic tires.
Not if you cherish your tires! It actually could be used for puncturing tires a la martin, but that is not what it was designed for. Nor was it used to chock steel wagon wheels. It is not a projectile.
It is a caltrop. It was designed so that however it landed when scattered, one spike pointed straight up. Used primarily to cripple horses and retard the advance of cavalry on the battlefield.
