Just started two days ago, Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq. So far a compelling read with a fortune of insight into the decisions to invade Iraq. I need to free up a couple of days.
I have three books open right now. 1. The Battle: A New History of Wateroo by Alessandro Barbero. Remarkably concise and well-written account of the battle that emphasize key events and doesn't get bogged down in reminisces and trivia. The maps could be better. 2. Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World by Sharon Waxman. A well-researched account of the battle between museums and the countries where ancient civilizations originated for possession of ancient artifacts. 3. Ramage's Devil by Dudley Pope. Another in my attempt to read every novel from the great age of sail that is still in print. This is a well-written and authentic novel by a man who is an expert on all things nautical, but the hero wins every battle and gets every girl and thus is less realistic than the grittier novels of CS Forester and Patrick O'Brien.
I read anything I can find about the 1900 Galveston hurricane, which killed between 6000-8000 people. When I was there last week, I bought Through a Night of Horrors: Voices from the 1900 Galveston Storm, a collection of letters and memoirs from the folks who lived through the storm.
I started at the beginning and I'm reading the entire Dirk Pitt series by Clive Cussler. On "Deep Six" now.
