The difference is, the cartoons were not being published in a Muslim country. I'm not staging wild protests and burning embassies, either.

The flag is a symbol of this country and what it represents. It is a symbol of the freedoms we have and of the people who fought and died to preserve those freedoms. In my opinion, disrespecting the American flag is about as un-patriotic as you can get. I don't understand how anybody can say they are patriotic and proud to live in this country, yet see no problem with burning or disrespecting the very symbol that represents this country.

To me, flag burning = anti-patriotism, plain and simple.

Its quite simple. Some poeple understand the actual freedom is more important than the symbol of the freedom. If you take away the freedom to protect the symbol then the symbol means nothing.

So you're saying because there is no law against flag burning (which would be protecting the symbol), that the flag means nothing?

I guess, then, that you wouldn't have a problem with somebody going into the National Archives and burning the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights?

No. That is not even close to what I am saying, and I don't know how I can explain my position any clearer. Re-read what I wrote.

That is the worst anology I have ever seen.

Well then, I must've misunderstood what you wrote, but it seemed pretty clear to me. Regardless, I still don't agree with your position at all.

How so? By your definition, they're just symbols of freedom. So burning them wouldn't be a problem because the freedom is more important, right?

But if you really think so, take LSUDeek's analogy. What would you say to somebody burning a statue or picture of Jesus on the Cross? After all, it's just a symbol.

    ok.

Because there is a big difference in priceless historical documents and a flag that is easily replaceable. But you are right, besides their historical significance, they are just pieces of paper.

It would hate it. Just like I hate flag burning. But that does not diminish what Christ did on the cross. Just like flag burning does not diminish the freedoms that we have in this country.
