I guess it’s more fun arguing than looking at the facts. Here are the facts. 1) The initial response to 9/11 was to go into Afghanistan and destroy the jihadist camps and warn the Taliban not to host terrorists. That was the right and necessary action. It should have ended there. 2) Failure to get OBL at Tora Bora was a disaster. The democrats in congress and W couldn’t let him get away so we stayed. 3) Staying morphed into trying to fix the country. This was an impossible task yet 3 presidents and12 congresses tried. This wasn’t a democrat or republican problem. It was a joint fuck up that no one had the courage to stop. 4) Trump should be given credit for actually committing to the pull out. 5) Trump’s timeline wasn’t realistic especially if we were supposed to remove all of the material in the country. 6) Biden made the pull out worse by his meddling in tactical decision. He willfully abandoned people including Americans and equipment. His actions forbidding mercenaries to provide air support cut the knees and life out of the Afghan army making quick defeat inevitable. No this debacle has fathers on all sides of the aisle and to try to lay full blame on any one person is either political bullshit or stupidity.
Finally the real and absolute blame for what happened in Afghanistan is on the Soviet Union. They invaded and decapitated a relatively stable country that was slowly modernizing. That left what became the Taliban as the only resistance. They were brave and resolute and with our help defeated the Soviets. Unfortunately they are closer to a 12th than a 21st century society with all the baggage of that time.
How do you know this? What would have been if the US didnt fund attacks against Russia? The US armed the Taliban.
If the Russians had succeeded in fully controlling the country they would have been able to put direct pressure on Pakistan, India and Iran. Access to India and the Indian Ocean was a long standing Russian objective predating and including the Soviet era. Also India was more in the Soviet influence than ours. It would have been a tremendous geopolitical gain for the Soviets and loss to the west. In 1978 it would have destabilized not only that part of the world but likely our position in Europe. If you’re old enough to remember we were still in a post Vietnam funk and seen as weak by the Soviets. They were riding high and there was significant danger if they had succeeded. Yes we armed the Taliban and yes it was a Hobson’s choice with no perfect outcome possible. I think we made the best of many bad choices available. The loss in Afghanistan did as much as anything in the collapse of the Soviet Union.
You have strange ideas of cause and effect. Based on your comments you see no moral difference between the United States and the Russians or the Chinese.
Eyes of the beholder. Whatever chemical reaction in your brain that set your morals does not apply to the world bro.
