I went to church when I was a teenager. The last time I went they showed all the teenagers, no adults, a movie called "The Burning Hell". Had all kindsa stuff, car wrecks, folks run over by trains, etc... at least that's what I remember. Then they told us if we didnt come forward and be saved right then we were going to hell. I havent been to church since except for weddings and funerals, one of which was mine and they wouldnt let me put a ring on my wife's finger. eheh I believe in God, I believe in Heaven & Hell, I don't believe I have to go to church to go to either. But the topic is belief in evolution.....I kinda have to lean to yes. Used to when I was a kid I used to have to crap at any given time during the day. Now, if it aint happened by 7:00 a.m., it aint happening till the next day.

You are jinxed. I've had every major brand of US car and a few foreign and they all have their bad points and good. There are GM lemons and Ford lemons. A guy that works on the pipeline with us is a Chevy guy through and through, they got him an explorer company vehicle and he loved it so much he bought his wife one. I bought my wife one brand new in 2002 and it was such a lemon I traded it after one year on an expedition which has had ZERO problems out of. I had a Chevy company truck once that stayed in the shop.

Trust me man there are good one's and bad ones in every brand.
alot of it has to do with:
    1. How old the platform is, ie new chassis, complete make over of the moniker? did they just totally re-do it? is it a Brand new make? if it is wait a year to see how it pans out... read alot of stuff on it from car testers, buyers reports etc. Not the commercials on TV.

    2. What day it was made on, how much automation/human labor went into it. Sad to say human labor is less consistant than machines, when machines mess up they tend to catch themselves not hide it.

    3. How well the engineering was done on the make to begin with. Believe it or not the design engineers have a budget to meet and they also jump from car company to car company cause some of these guys are well known. the guy that came up with the boss design the 69-70 Stangs was a GM employee at one time. So the guy that developed that FORD taurus Lemon for you may just be designing your Caprice next week.

    4. There is big time competition in this stuff, if it wasn't, you wouldn't see the dollars coming from the factory to NASCAR and such. they certainly have posted record losses lately but they STILL sponsor the race cars. For R & D and exposure. SO one company could go BROKE quickly if ALL their cars were LEMONS..... your theory simply isn't true, no way it could be, Ford wouldn't last a year if it was.

    5. Ford and GM are NOT just Ford and GM. Ford owns Mazda, Ferrari, Volvo, Ford tractors, part of International ( IH ). And we all know many brands the General owns. It would be virtually impossible with the level of automation that exists today for EVERY model of a certain make of car be unreliable. How many Ford tractors you see broke down on the trail? Ok how about F350 duallys? not many, at $45K a pop they are super relaible. As they should be.

That being said, you get what you pay for, if you buy a cheapo GM car or Kia or Ford focus...... well dont expect much. You pay for those engineers budgets. Up your spending about 5 grand and you might just get a better car. A taurus is a low end family sedan for the masses. NOT that it cant be good or that you were buying cheap, not saying that, just ...you know what I am saying. ther's nothing wrong with being an ALL GM type of person. nothing at all. But if you blindly follow this mode, one day the general is going to deal you a bad hand and you'll be hurt, you'll be in denial. lol
Some people only buy foreign because they say they are better, and some are. it's all in what your life experiences lead you to believe. You have a small scope of experiences as do I but that's not all you have to go on, unless you choose to let it be. With the internet and the level of competition today, you have many more resources to draw from.

My advice on buying a car? shop around, never buy brand new, buy LIKE NEW, this might even be three or four years old, but get LOW mileage, smoke free, little old lady cars in a make that you like, that does what you want it to do. Dont buy an all wheel drive subaru expecting to go mud riding in it. If you get my drift. Be willing to spend some money to get what you want.

need a 4 door truck? dont settle on two. Don't need 4 wheel drive? dont buy it, that's just something else to tear up. ALSo best advice I can give to young people, dont try to hot rod your daily transportation, if you want to hot rod your street car, buy a second car for reliability, you're gonna need it trust me.

I wonder if this thread is suffieciently hijacked?

I'm not a Chevy guy. I'm a Honda guy. :hihi: My arguments are based on family history and sedans/economy cars only. Trucks/suvs seem to be the bread and butter reliability and market share wise for the American companies. My dad likes his Expedition and Ranger but hated his Thunderbird , Taurus station wagon, and Aerostar van. (His Caravan was crap too). He's had that truck and SUV for seven years now, which is the longest time period he's ever had any vehicles.

sad but true. unions. :dis: there once was a time where those were necessary but that time is long gone.

Sure they can. Everyone wants huge trucks and SUVs now anyway, and the people that don't feel better about buying a 11K Taurus over a 11K Kia anyway due to the name. Even though it's chit.

Again, I'm not a GM person. Why must a 11K car be crap? Honda has solved this problem with their Civic. 130,000 miles and going strong except for the catalytic converter. Couldn't say the same about my crapalier or that rental taurus :p

It's moot for someone like you that has the tools and resources available to do any type of automotive work necessary. Those of us that don't refuse to waste time and money (it costs more than money to put a car in the shop with a family).

Undaztood. Honda's Certified Used program is like new.

an 11K car isn't necessarily crap, but it may not last as long or have all the engineering built into it as a more expensive car. They are getting better though, 25 years ago a cheap car didn't have half the engineering one does today. Trickle down effect, market demand etc... have helped push some of the better things that used to be high end, to basic options.

Honda accord, 1994, 264K miles, 4 door, bought for $1000.00 all maintanance records, ( my sister's car ).

All I had to do was replace an AC hose and the driver's door handle. I've spent maybe $800.00 on it including tag and insurance.

It doesn't use oil and gets great gas mileage. Great second family car for gas mileage. We've had it almost a year.

I buy car's based on needs, not brands.
