This is exactly why I think Flynn is a better leader. The players seem to make plays with Flynn in charge. I think JR has more talent than Flynn, but Matt is a better general.
you answered the arguement... he DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG... Russell posts solid stats... but he often takes a bad sack, or has an untimely miss on a WR when he is open... He isn't as bad as Aaron Brooks, but when you compare two such good options, I take the one who can manage a game better, and to me that is Flynn... certainly we have to see more action out of him though...
There's going to be some controversy if we start out next year with JR and our offense struggles like it did this year. I think JR does some really great things and some really bad things. You don't go and play one of the best defenses in the nation and just pound them in every way possible when your offense has been lacking basically the whole year. Flynn brings things to the table that make LSU better. First, he's fast and when he decides to run, he doesn't hesitate. A couple of drives would have been over without his runs. Second, because of this it makes the play-action roll outs waaaaaayyyyyy more effective because teams start to fear the QB running. Third, he throws the ball away when all is looking bad! Fourth, he gets rid of the ball faster when the house-blitz is on avoiding 40-yard sacks. Fifth, his passes have a lighter touch which make them easier to handle. Sixth, he doesn't always take 10 years to get the play called. And finally, Jimbo seems to call a better game when he has a mobile QB because there's more options. However, this is one game (although a huge one) and we'll have to see if he can do it consistently. It's hard to do over time. It isn't the first time he's come in and looked great. He came in against Cupcake St. and our offense immediately looked and scored more than it had when JR was in. Either way, no way would I say this "JR will start until he leaves" kind of stuff. Although it might happen, our offense didn't have it this year. Yeah, we went 10-2 with JR which was great. But I think we could have done that with Flynn too given the chance. We need to get our receivers to catch JR's passes better too if he is the #1 guy next year. I say just see how things go and play the QBs according to how they play in real games. It should push JR to work on his short passing game which I think needs work on as well as his decision making. That is the biggest thing Flynn has over JR and it was apparent even against Georgia. Either way, we've got two potentially great QBs (actually 3). And no, RP won't transfer because he'd have to sit out a year before playing somewhere else.
Don't talk about stats. Throw that out the window and see what you saw. This was not a completely new offense, just an offense through the eyes of Matt Flynn instead of JaMarcus Russell. Flynn obviously doesn't have Russell's arm, but having the best arm in ages is only as good as your ability to utilize it. A great quarterback doesn't have to have a great arm if he has great football wits. Addai was awesome, and throw in Hester. The O-Line's job was made easier because Miami had to respect Flynn's wheels. The receivers weren't catching bullets. We can only speculate what effect Flynn had in the huddle, but I think that had a serious effect on the whole offense. I believe Flynn has better presence at this time. I'm not writing Russell off, but this season LSU was dominant against comparable talent in one game (Peach Bowl against Miami, with Flynn at the helm). If Russell can put things together, he would be scary. I do believe that both Flynn and Russell were recruited the same year. It's pretty plain to see that this year LSU played national championship caliber under Flynn, and much less than that under Russell. PS - The defense was nice. Propers to Pellini.
QB is all about decision-making. great arm-strength, great size and iron balls can't make up for it. there are many factors in the dominant performance tonight, but my money is on Flynn as the better college QB-better decision maker, better accuracy.
better wheels, and better decision making too... I'll have to rewatch the game to be able to see this for sure, but I didn't see him telegraphing as much as JR does
It's not worth arguing. I just don't see it your way, and you don't see it mine, and frankly none of it matters because the coaches will sort it out by September without taking into account any of our opinions. Besides, it was a great win and Flynn did awesome. No reason to bitch or argue about anything. Besides, who wouldn't want this problem over the problem of just trying to find one guy to run your offense. When does Spring football start?
I don't understand people complaining about too many bowls, and not getting enthused about LSU's bowl game. Damn, college football is almost over and we're going into another 8 month non-football drought. Enjoy it while you still can, its almost gone.
dude... if you would actually read half the stuff I post, the only thing I ever said about Brooks was that the saints have far bigger needs than the QB position...
