Very well said. I can understand not showing your full hand, at least to an extent. The thing that is worrying no matter how you play it is that LSU was manhandled on both lines. LSU has established itself as having some of the most domiant lines in college football over the last decade. They were dominated sat night. If you dont win the line battle you wont do well when the opponents talent level is at or closer to your level like in the SEC. A fire must be lit under their a$$es, plain and simple. Those are problems that can be resolved though. I dont think our DL is quite as good though as years past. Our CB play could be as good as '07 for sure. LSU needs to regain the urgency and intensity they had in the Peach Bowl.
Right, I don't recall the last time the Tigers had that much trouble running inside. It looked like Scott was hitting a brick wall on every play. I haven't had a chance to look at the replay, what happened to Hitt, T-Bob?
Cparso has a good solid post. We know Crowton has a much more aggressive playbook, and chose not to use it. Cparso's idea is as good as any I've seen in 2 days, I'll buy it (you should have got here SOONER!) ISLSTL points out there are some weak spots that need work, and that's right also. That's what first games are about. Let's see next week.
I remembered a lot of the runs going to the left of center, so that would be T-bob and the dude with the name I can't spell right now. With what they showed Saturday night, this line does not appear to be a power line but more finesse. When KW was in the game and running more wide, we were more successful. I just hate obvious running formations. It's the dumbest thing in football. Get 2 receivers in the game and create some level of deception. We had WAY TOO MANY empty sets Saturday night. Crowton is better than that. I hope he corrects this. It will only get worse come SEC play.
I replayed the game this morning and watched T-Bob a lot. He did pretty well it looked like to me, especially on plays where he doubles quickly on a DT, then slides off and blocks a LB, too.
This will sound odd, but I'm not 100% convinced your Tigers weren't hungry and angry, but you also have to understand how hungry and angry those Husky players and fans have been. I mean yeah, an 0-12 team last year, but it was just 2000 that we finished 3rd. I remember for all the talk that season between whether Miami or Florida State for the NC game, and the Oklahoma coach saying afterward that he didn't understand that controversy since he thought that they should have played Washington in the NC game that year... Sark and Holt are really fired up, enthusiastic, high energy guys, the type of energy that spreads and is infectious. I mean come on, our coaches got an Unsportsmanlike penalty for excessive celebration. How often do coaches get that. So I don't think intensity was an issue, our Huskies were just more hungry and for good reason. Sure, later in the game the Tigers defense started looking a little tired, but I mean come on, nearly 100 plays on the field during the game, it was past midnight back home, and matching the intensity that was being put out is pretty draining on any team. Anyway, good luck this season!
Our DL actually played okay.. I think Lockers speed made it look bad. The issue I had with the defensive line was containment.. If that was any other QB but Locker or Tebow we would have had a handful of sacks.
I understand your point, and I think you're right about the intentions, but I think it has the opposite effect. If you're trying to build up a quarterback's confidence, why would you limit him, especially in the passing game? If I'm the QB, I'm wondering why the coach won't turn me loose!! I'm possibly even thinking he does not have confidence in me. Not to mention the fact that we've got a tremendous stable of receivers. If you limit the quarterback, you take those guys right out of the offense. Crowton did the same thing last year with Lee. When GC played things close to the vest, we ended up in obvious pass situations, and that's usually (not every time) when the pick 6's came. Lee's best moments last year came when GC's play calling reflected confidence in him. JJ's still new to the college game, but from what I can see, self confidence does not appear to be a weakness for him. The last thing we need is for the coaching staff to start putting doubt into his head by limiting what he's allowed to do.
aside from the win, that was the biggest thing I saw about the game as well. Those 2 guys were all over the field all night long.
