That Long Beach State game was incredible. I was literally on my knees in front of the TV for most of that 9th inning. I remember thinking that we'd probably put everything we had left into that game, and we'd come out flat the next day. I was happy just to make it into the championship game. Boy, was I wrong! It must have been just what we needed. Whicita State had a pitcher, Darren Dreifort (sp?), who was all-world and the only pitcher hyped during the CWS. At one point in the game, the announcers said, "No one ever treats Dreifort this way..."
Skip Bertman is one of the master motivators of all time as far as making baseball players believe in themselves and their team and that is probably the biggest effect any baseball coach can really have in a game other than the use of his pitchers and playing hunches. He was able to make those teams know that they were going to come out on top, they truely believed in each other and played till the final out. And we as fans got to witness some of the greatest games in CWS history.
