The problems are caused by man- levees, oil field canals. Isn't it possible by undoing the man-made causes of coastal erosion that the river would eventually build new barrier islands and new marshlands?

Not at the scale they are talking about. They are feel-good projects. We would have to let the river completely change course above New orleans and allow it to switch channels an build delta's in a natural fashion. It is politically unacceptable for politicians to tell tens of thousand of people that their property would be subject to inundation in order to rebuild the delta.

The levees and canals aren't causing subsidence. They are just hastening marsh breakup. The marsh is sinking anyway and is receiving no new sediment, which is trapped behind 1,000 dams in the upper Mississippi valley and the river is locked between levees and revetments to keep it from shifting and changing course to spread it sediment over the whole delta.

And sea level is rising due to global warming.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens. What are Louisianians gonna do when they either have to choose a democrat or a fucking scumbag. We have a guy who had hookers put him in diapers, tried to get his mistress that he used a salary that we pay to try to get an abortion, and I bet he wins, all because of the big O attachment that will be used to death on Edwards.

Funny you have a problem with Vitter getting some action on the side but none with Bill Clinton doing the same.

I don't care who anyone bangs, but the diaper things is creepy. No idea if it is true Though. Mistresses and hookers, that normal alpha male stuff. Diaper stuff is awful. Plus getting caught is stupid. Use a burner phone and a fake name or whatever.

Agree with all of the above, except your Al Gore global warming comment....ya just had to go and ruin it!

My BF has been involved with some projects along marshes and coastlines where they have come in and lined the canals and beaches with rock barriers to limit the wave action thus reducing effects of erosion whether it be from the gulf or large vessels. The before and after photo's of how the marshes have restored themselves behind the rock barriers is pretty impressive. An expensive process but appears to work

Context my friend, context. If Bill wasn't fit to be president after all that, Vitter isn't fit to be governor.

Red is certainly right about the wetlands. They are gone and that's just about all there is to it. My best pal back in BTR works in coastal restoration as well and it's just futile, because the river is diverted. Vice news did kind of a dumb documentary recently blaming petroleum companies, but the real reason is that the floodplain just doesn't exist to provide sediment anymore.

Red is also correct that politicians can't say this.
