This is the tip of the iceberg. Black research into directed energy weapons has been going on for 30 years and practical working high-energy lasers and particle beams have been developed. Microwave weapons have already been used in Iraq for crowd control. It causes severe pain but does not burn or cause permanent harm. People who step into its range will quickly get back. It has been described as the worlds first practical force field. Of course it can be dialed up to kill.

At least a dozen directed weapons systems are in development or production and have been openly acknowledged. But there are still black programs that may be far advanced and nothing is publicly known. But there are rumors . . .

A high-powered energy source is still the limiting factor for many of these weapons. Anything that makes them more efficient is gold right now. Whenever someone develops a cheap high-temperature superconductor . . . start buying their stock on NASDAQ.

It costs $32 million to purchase and only about a dollar to fire. Pretty sweet.

General Grevious seems out of place. He wasn't a member of the Galactic Empire. (Because I know that, I guess that almost makes me as big of a geek as these people here.. Almost)
