Meyer is a solid coach with a ton of enthusiasm and creativity for the game ..... at least, offensively. But tirk is right when he says Meyer will have a rude awakening forthcoming. Specifically in two areas. First, Meyer's gonna' be recruiting in the big leagues now and he'd better have his mac together. His precense in the SEC, along with the addition of the Biggest-Cock-On-Earth (Spurrier), add an improved layer of complexity to SEC coaching..... and what if Zooker ends up at Ole Miss? ....... Saban, Tuberville, Richt, Spurrier, Fulmer, Zook, and the ever unpredictable Nutt among others. Fairly formiddable lineup, IMO. And some would say SEC coaching has taken a backseat to the ACC lately :hihi: The second reason, IMO, is that the offensive system Meyer runs is in for "speed shock." His offensive system will now be facing DE's that are coming off the corner running 4.4's-to-4.6's instead of the MWC standard of 4.6's-to-4'7's. All of a sudden, the QB is on is back. One thing's for certain, he's better adapt quickly or he'll end up like Zook.
i think he will adjust to the difference in speed since his system is not far removed from SOS plus UF can almost recruit itself. Spurrier barely recruited so that says all you need to know. Meyer will recruit his ass off and bring some stability and discipline to the program i do believe. he is a character guy. one big problem, he will be losing the most efficient QB i have probably ever seen play. Alex Smith. Leak will be fine under him but Smith is a once every decade type of QB. either way, the SEC is going to be more exciting than ever. the quality has gone up another tier simply by the latest coaching changes. more to follow.
Many a mid-major coach has fallen on his butt when he moved to the big time. UM is an unproven coach at this level. I saw a few games of his this year. If he had played LSU's schedule, he would have lost a minimum of 4 games and still be at Utah. Fullmer, Saban, Spurrier, and Richt will face him every year. Then he will have Al. and Allbarn rotating in. To say nothing of Fla. St. every year. Remember, only Spurrier has ever been successful at Fl. Let's not crown him yet.
But he won't be using MAC players anymore, he will be recruiting from the talent pool everyone else in the SEC draws from. You mean 'his Utah QB would be on his back'....at UF, he'll have a QB that is as much faster than an SEC DE as his Utah QB was faster than DEs this year. The UF name along will get him talent - not to mention his offensive 'aura'. Everyone seems to look at his team in a vacuum..."he wouldn't last 1 season in the SEC with that team". Well...he won't have that team - he'll have a team full of athletes more athletic than he ever had at Utah. It's a moot point to compare how his Utah team would do in the SEC.
I'ts not that I personally live in a vacuum and think he's going to fail. I think he'll have success with his offense, but I'm not ready to start crowning them SEC champions just yet. There's valid arguments on both sides. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. One thing's for sure like someone else has pointed out - the SEC will be stronger because of him. Especially the East
who said the SEC crowns are gonna be rolling in? being successful doesn't mean he has win the title every year. unless you're in gainesville. one thing is for certain, he will have time to develop a program or UF will be a firin' foley and spending lots more money.
Urban Meyer = Urban Legend? We shall see. We might just get our first little insight when we see how Utah plays at the Fiesta Bowl. If they can't beat Pitt, it's gonna be a long hard struggle for this young man in the sunshine state.
