Re: That is a great letter........ Does anyone have the list of AD's who supported this NCAA measure?
Re: That is a great letter........ Jeez, no kiddin', huh! It was well written and made tons of good points, but.... about mid-way through, I had to stop and see how much longer I had to read.... and then gave up. Oh well... all I can say is that I'm glad we're the Tigers and not the Chitimachas or Caddos or Houmas
I agree. Too long-winded. Salient points: How was this decision reached? Who had a say? Under what authority is this mandate made (see first point)? What are the official/legal definitions of the terms used in indicting some, but not other, teams? What are the procedural and legal avenues for appeal? You will be hearing from our lawyers! . . .
Hopefully, yes. Don't laugh, but I'm going to be on the LSU hockey team. We already have an ice hockey tournament scheduled in mid January. I'm afraid that we're gonna get killed by more experienced teams, but every school's gotta start somewhere. About this issue, there's just gonna be too much opposition from people who feel like the ND president that the NCAA's going to have to drop this. If Indian names are offensive, then what about any team named after any group of people? Why don't they care about that? Anyway, anybody who's been following college sports at all knows that the NCAA does things like this on a regular basis. If they get away with this, who knows what's next. They're going to be the ACLU of sports if we don't watch out.
Off topic but my favorite Bayou grafitti was a post/response from around 1980. Someone wrote JESUS SAVES! with a big black Sharpie. Several days later someone else wrote underneath it MOSES INVESTS!
Although I like the letter and agree with almost all of its sentiments, there is a problem with "Sioux" that doesn't exsist with "illini." Sioux is not the name that these people orgininally gave themselves. The Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota are their self given names, Sioux is a diragatory named given to them by a rival tribe that means "snake." White men heard this name and have been using it ever since. So you can understand why some of the "Sioux Nation" have a sore spot about others using that term.
A good point, but most of the Sioux have adopted the name in use it interchangeably with Lakota/Dakota. It doesn't seem to be considered derogatory. It is just a French word for the nation that is widely recognized. http://www.sioux.org/ http://www.standingrock.org/ http://www.rosebudsiouxtribe-nsn.gov/ http://santeedakota.org/
Hockey is a really exciting game, and I'd support it if LSU were to adopt it. I really got into the Icegators season before last and when they went AWOL, I was pretty upset.
