Tubbervile punked out big time. He had an oppurtunity to debate this and stand by his statements, but he tucked tail.
I think the rest of the SEC coaches need to get behind Tubby and speak out! If they do not the SEC will finish 2nd every year.
You must have been listening to something else. I still don't see what he backed down on. Tell me what he backed down on.
Well, that's been his contention the whole time, but he specifically said that this is the system we have. And under this system, the Gameday crew's opinions carry too much weight and therefore they need to be more careful about what they say because when you hear something over and over, it's going to affect votes in the polls.
thats the stupid part. you cant restrict a network from givin over the top opinions whether its sensationalist news or ESPN. both are more alike than we care to admit yet they gained their niche because they were frontrunners in their industry. that's why people watch. im not sure how you plan to regulate their opinions and make them tone it down. if u wanna watch sports highlights only turn down the sound but im not sure anyone else will.
the solutions are: have a playoff (there will still be problems some years deciding who goes, but the debates would be relatively mild) go exclusively computers. make the pollsters pass a test (maybe every week) to make sure they know college football. i bet most of them dont know it as well as they should and rely on ESPN to know who's good. Hell, maybe NCAA should pay 100 people. I'd bet 95% of voters just know about one conference and then watch sportscenter to get info on the rest of the country.
College football will never be completely fair - ever. If there's a playoff there will be a debate about which teams should get to go. Anybody who thinks teams that get left out of the playoff won't be just as pissed as teams that get left out of the national championship are mistaken, IMO. And if we make the number of teams that make the playoff a large number, then we take away college football's best aspect - the importance of each game. I like that losing one or two games is a huge deal. Conferences will never be equal & strength of schedule will always be debatable. The list goes on. I like adding an extra game if there's debate about who should be number 1 between the best two teams after the current bowls.
how important are the rest of Notre Dame's or Ohio St's or Michigan's games? any argument against a playoff is bs. no other ncaa sport decides things another way. not taking polls til midway through season would be a nice start though
