the majority of those here illegally do the most elementary, low-end, basic labor that no one else wants to do. how many white people do you see lining up to pick tomatoes for minimum wage?

In southern california where we harbor a ridiculous number of illegals, there aren't any tomatoes to pick. Agriculture that once used to absolutely dominate the rancho way of life has long disappeared. There is still some out in Riverside and San Berdoo but the majority you refer to are doing much more mainstream hourly work like fast food, retail, restaurant, customer service, health care, spanish language call centers. They take the 5 fwy north and settle in towns just off exits. There isn't a retail or restaurant location within a mile or so of an exit that doesn't employ almost all hispanics and a huge majority are still illegal but trying to be legal. At one time you could drive by certain parking lots and see dozens of illegals hoping to get picked up for day labor but their numbers have dwindled. The jobs they seem to have taken are those that used to be filled by part-time students, working moms, retirees.
I know that the recent drought has been terribly hard on agriculture in your area so what you say stands to reason. That said, here in NC all of our valleys are covered in corn, bean and tomato fields and are worked exclusively by "pickers," as they are locally referred to. They are illegals to be certain. I do not dispute, either, that some have found "better" work in retail, especially in restaurants. I have a central warehouse for my furniture stores and I feel certain that several of our guys are not legal. That said, you'd be surprised to see how hard it is to find a white kid or a black kid who will work as hard or take as much pride in their work as the hispanics do.
I have seen lots of Mexicans doing framing, roofing,bricklaying, ect that used to be done by both black and white workers
and there is good reason for that.....the black and white workers do not want those jobs any more. it's not that hispanics are dominating those jobs on purpose, they are simply filling in where ever they can get work.
GWB got 34% when he won in 2000 and about that same number again in 2004. I believe in the Republican's famous "autopsy" after the last election they estimated they would need around that same number to win. Right now Trump is polling at more like 13%. Romney won around 27%
