Floyd himself was cleared by the NCAA of all charges. If anything USC's compliance office dropped the ball after Floyd went to them when he was initially contacted by Mayo's handler, exactly as he should have done.
Trent Johnson simply could not recruit. Could never keep the best talent in Louisiana. He coached pretty well for what he was working with. Until we find a master recruiter, this program is going absolutely nowhere and will be mired in mediocrity for a long time. At this point, we don't need to play the morality police. If Floyd is the best person in terms of success for this program, then so be it. No time to bring in a "nice guy".
I, for one, am disappointed to see him go. The last thing this program needed was more instability. I think Johnson had the team going in the right direction. A few more pieces and its going pretty well. That said it is what it is. I have no high expectations on the next hire. I just hop whoever it is they stay and do well.
Most LSU fans can't appreciate a grind it out, defensive style of basketball. We need an exciting brand of basketball if they want butts in the seats. In addition, increased attendance could help recruiting.
Anyone still dreaming about Scott Drew for coach??? Baylor faces possible sanctions The men's and women's basketball programs at Baylor University are facing possible NCAA sanctions following an investigation that uncovered more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages during a 29-month span. Men's coach Scott Drew, women's coach Kim Mulkey and their assistants were involved in the impermissible phone calls and texts. ESPN.com obtained a copy of the summary disposition, which was produced by the NCAA enforcement staff and Baylor. Combined, the men's and women's basketball programs sent 738 impermissible text messages and made 528 impermissible calls over a span of nearly 2½ years. The probe also determined that former men's assistant Mark Morefield committed a major violation when he attempted to influence two AAU coaches to furnish the NCAA with false and misleading information regarding a series of text messages. Morefield resigned in July 2011. The report concluded that Drew demonstrated a "failure to monitor" the activities of two of his assistant coaches and that there also was an overall "failure to monitor" by the institution, which found 405 additional impermissible calls and text messages from nine different sports, ranging from football to the equestrian program, from January to July 2011, during its investigation. According to the report, all of the coaches -- including Drew and Mulkey -- have acknowledged their involvement in the respective findings and are at risk for a show-cause penalty, which means any penalties will remain on record regardless of where they coach. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/s...or-bears-teams-facing-possible-ncaa-sanctions
That same article also says it's unlikely that the NCAA will hit Drew with show-cause on top of what Baylor is self-imposing. Here's a very good article summarizing the state of the coaching search. It also gives an interesting take on the notion of locking down the borders vs. recruiting nationally: http://thehayride.com/2012/04/lsus-...-with-a-vengeance-in-basketball-coach-search/
Here's a link to a free Scout article on the strengths and weaknesses of the pool of candidates that LSU may hire to replace Johnson... http://louisianastate.scout.com/2/1175230.html
Dolomite, That article you posted a link to is EXCELLENT !! You guys should definitely click the link and take the time to read the whole article....very insightful analysis !!!
I really hope LSU doesn't approach this hire NFL style. What I mean by that is; I hope LSU doesn't just recycle some coach who has experience at this level, but only has a mediocre record to show for it. Either get a stud or maybe take a risk on someone who is part of a prestigious coaching tree.
