It's hard to put these in an order, I like all of them. But if I'm looking at it from a musician's standpoint and just raw singing ability according to what I like to hear.. This would be my rough list: 1) Brad Delp - Boston - Probably one of the best IMHO, hard to put these in an order. 2) Steve Walsh - Kansas - Clear voice, good control and range. 3) Steve Perry - Journey - What can you say? Everyone loves Journey. 4) Geoff Tate - Queensryche - Trained opera singer turned metal. Has amazing range and clarity in his voice. 5) Ann Wilson - Heart - Awesome female rock vocalist.. she was awesome in her day. 6) Freddy Mercury - Queen - Dude could sing like nobody's business. 7) Elvis - Wasn't a big fan, but the man could sing. 8) Scott Weiland - Stone Temple Pilots - Good all around singer, unique voice. 9) Layne Stale - Alice In Chains - Kind of a strange style to most, but talented nonetheless. 10) David Gilmour - Pink Floyd - Good tone, rarely hits an off key note.. Best. Band. Ever. 11) Maynard James Keenan - Tool - Great voice, very versitle. 12) Tom Johnson - Doobie Brothers - Great singer, great music. 13) Don Henley - Eagles - All around, good voice.. not the best, but good. 14) John Lennon - Beatles - Never was a big fan, but gotta give him credit. 15) Joe Cocker - Male Janis Joplin 16) Janis Joplin - Female Joe Cocker 17) Robert Plant - Led Zepplin - Classic. Just classic. 18) Chris Cornell - Soundgarden - Strong and loud, and still melodic. 19) Steven Tyler - Aerosmith - Abrasive, but great range. 20) Ozzy - I mean, come on.. It's Ozzy.
Hey Swerved, nice to see Walsh way up on your list. Kansas had some phenomenal music, the greatest most profound lyrics of any hard rock band (and any band for that matter) and Livgen was nails on lead.
I think part of the criteria for great rock voices includes popular success. Nobody would ever admit Ozzy is a vocal virtuosos but he is still one of the greatest rock voices. Tate falls into the category of great voices that nobody really knows unless you're a metal head. He is HUGELY underrated. Unfortunately you ask the average rock fan who Geoff Tate is and they wont have a clue. You ask them who Ozzy Osborne is and its a no brainer.
Yeah this is true, but he's still an awesome singer so I had to put him up there. Your point stands though, not exactly as popular as some of the other names. I almost threw Bruce Dickinson in there too..
Yeah I always liked them. I love to hear bands that were all about vocals.. Keyboards are always a plus too since that's what I play..
