Kevin Cronin, there's a unique voice that was effective. Dave only at #11? Come on, support your boy better than that! Aaron Lewis, excellent pick. LRB a little too soft to fit into this category. Fantastic voice, however.
Such a tough thing to list. Its so subjective when you consider the greatest rock voice could be the most unique and distinguishable (like a Joe Cocker) or who has the best range and dynamics (like a Steve Perry). Here's mine and a few comments: 1) Steve Perry (Combination of range and power unmatched in rock music but sadly he blew out his vocal cords during the process) 2) Robert Plant (He could hit every note but didnt have the sonic punch of Perry. His voice today isnt what it once was but considering his singing style he still sounds very, very good) 3) Ann Wilson (Probably the best female rock voice in terms of range and tone) 4) Freddie Murcury (Could easily put above Wilson. Had an octave range thats never been matched. Flaming gay blade but still top notch) 5) Elvis (Arguably the most recognizable voice the world over) 6) John Lennon (Much better voice then ever given credit for) 7) Burton Cummings (Listen to Stand Tall or Dream of a Child....pure butter, should be in everyones top 10) 8) Janis Joplin (As soon as you hear her, there is no doubt who's singing) 9) Lou Gramm (Great vocal timbre. His voice is smooth as silk through all his range) 10) Paul McCartney ( Still sounds good even in his 60's and smoother than Lennon) 11) Steve Walsh (Maybe the best technical singer/musician combination on the list. He plays almost as well as he sings) 12) Joe Cocker (See Joplin, there is no mistake who you are listening too when he opens his mouth) 13) Rod Stewart (One of the most distinguishable voices in rock. Adapted over the years. Rock, Disco, Classics...he's done it all) 14) Roger Daltrey (In his prime he could hit all the notes. Great sound) 15) Stevie Nicks (That raspy voice is unmistakable) 16) Roger Hodgson (Supertramp, possibly the best harmonies ever produced with Rick Davies. Hodgson had the better voice of the two, very unique) 17) Neil Young (Not a great voice but one of the top 20 rock voices of all time) 18) Jeff Lynne (ELO, Traveling Wilbury's. A really fine voice) 19) Bob Segar (The male version of Stevie Nicks rasp. Very recognizable voice) 20) Ozzy ( See Neil Young, not a great voice but one of the greatest!)
All my music friends rave about this guy. They say he is technically the finest singer they ever heard. Sadly he died before his time and very little of his material was distributed before his death. This is a rather sad song considering his fate.
issl, you put Elton John #3 on your original list, and then stated at the bottom that soft rockers "like James Taylor and Elton John" should not be included. #1 Male voice: Freddie Mercury #1 Female voice: Ann Wilson, with an honorable mention to Pat Benatar
I reconsidered after Red added him to his list. I think Elton did enough rocking to be eligible for this list.
