Skip said today on NOLA.com that it does not matter if coaches are under contract or not (although he was referring to Petrino and Tville). So maybe Spurrier is not out of the question. I doubt Spurrier is really wanting to win just 7 or 8 every year and coast. I think he has a lot to prove after his failure in DC, and his contract is weak (1.3 mil). I would not dismiss so soon, although I do think it is a long shot.

I don't think it matters for a number of coaches but Spurrier is not going to be one of them. IMO, people are taking this complete Internet rumor and running with it.

The guy is beyond happy at USC where he wants to coach, win, and play golf...especially at Augusta.

    We will never get him.

Had the LSU job been open at the same time as USC maybe but I agree not a chance now. I still Like Petrino but would like to see the list Skip comes up with before crowning anyone king. I'm not sure who all is available but I have to think some pretty good coaches will be interested.

    I would agree with that.

I'm not sure why you feel that way. I know his name has been thrown around the board a little, but I think he's the logical choice if we can get him away from the NFL

I don't know, but it sure sounds a helluva lot better than all the support for a guy that went 3-8, resigned just before he was going to get fired, lost all the support and respect of his team, and had a panic attack hours before the last game he coached.

Just say no to Butch Davis!

Just a thought for those who get their panties in a bunch about certain coaches being "unacceptable": Nick Saban's Michigan St. teams never set foot in a Rose Bowl and lost their last three bowl games with him at the helm.

Show of hands: how many of us considered him a great prospect when he was first hired?

All I'm saying is I'm open to taking a chance on a guy with attitude, who can recruit, has the Xs and Os down pat, but just hasn't had the chance to fully prove himself due to where he's coached in the past.

That's why I pulled Mike Leach's name out a week or so ago: guy can coach, and is stuck at a big conference school in a division where he'll never win.

Kind of sounds like Nick Saban, circa 1999.

Not saying he's the guy, but I'd like LSU to mix in a few Mike Leaches along with the Butch Davises in this search. They should have a nice mix of talent from which to choose, ideally.

Spurrier and Petrino are not available...no way no how. Forget it.

Gruden doesn't want to coach CFB. He's an NFL man through and through.

Erickson could be one of the worst possible fits with LSU out of all the names mentioned in this thread. Awful given the recent progress by LSU.

Chow has heavy "family strings" tying him to the west coast, so he'll likely stay in the Pac-10 until the right opportunity opens up. It's not about the money for Chow - great guy though.

Butch Davis ...... available, but he wouldn't be on my short list. The game is beginning to pass him by. Actually, he IS on my short list, but I'm an Auburn fan. All kidding aside, I think a BD hire by LSU spells regression for the program.

Jeff Tedford ....absolutely. Good quality prospect.... ready to step up and is a monster recruiter. Very innovative and brings a complete, solid staff.

I haven't seen anybody mention Jimbo Fisher.... do y'all not feel he's qualified? Has he earned a shot? Despite some of the ciriticism he took this season (some deserved, some not), JF has a solid track record and can run a bigtime program.

Jack Del Rio - if you can get him, it would be a steal. But he'd need to take a salary cut to come to LSU if I'm not mistaken. He is well liked by the owner and by several of the big corporate sponsors (Alltel, JM Family) in Jax. He also seems to be close to building something there, and his family has said they like Jax nearly as much as Texas.

Believe it or not, Mike Price would be worth considering. Hell, he's served his time in purgatory....time to let him up. He can coach, but he is a Pac-10 weenie

Romeo Crenel - dunno much about him, so I can't really say. The talking heads on TV seem to rave about him.

Mike Reilly - oh please.....haven't y'all seen enough?

Too bad about Saban.... I thought he improved the SEC. Sucks that he had to announce on Christmas Day, but I guess there's never a good day for news like that. I agree with the poster above that stated he didn't feel Saban should coach the CapOne - but for a different reason. Good luck with the search.

Maybe if Saban hadn't played the "I'm not interested" card in November, we could have gotten Spurrier.

Another reason that I hate how Saban handled this.

    I want Butch Davis.

    1. National Championship as defensive line coach with Hurricanes.

    2. Superbowl as defensive line coach with Cowboys.

    3. Superbowl as defensive coordinator with Cowboys.

    4. Completely turned around lousy, probation-stricken Hurricanes program as head coach. Coached them from lousy to #2 in the country in five years. Recruited better than maybe any college coach in history.

    5. Guided Browns from dismal team to the playoffs as head coach before injuries, close losses, and some bad decisions led to resignation.
