    WOW! I was almost going to be insulted with this post then I saw that no women were there. At our fishing and hnting camp there were always my Mom and I. We took turns cooking and hunting/fishing. I even remember being around 12 years old and being able to cook the whole dinner for my family! Anyway, the point was that my Mom and Dad taught me how to cook, but no matter what camp I was at it was both.

    Me, too. Grandfather was great cook. Once when the weather was bad and the roads impassable, we couldn't get out, stuck on the lake, so he improvised a fish stew recipe using fresh bass and limited ingredients from the pantry that became, and still is a family favorite. I've tried for years to replicate his bar-b-que sauce made from scratch. Have never gotten it right and watched him make it many times. My uncle made the best gravies, soups, and stews, and gumbos. I learned roux-making from him. He made the best chicken-fried venison and taught me not to overcook oysters.

    Why isnt it great for you? You have:
    Ground Beef (if you use Sirloin) = Protein
    Beans= Excellent sorce of PRO
    Rotel, Bell Pepper, Salsa = Vitamin C, Vitamin A
    Cornbread = Carbohydrate
    Cheese= Calcium, Vitamin D
    If you go easy on the cheese and sour cream I'd say you have a great, nutrient rich meal.

    The best meals I've ever had were out on the trail. It's fun to get creative towards the end when you just throw leftovers into one pot with rice and hope for the best.

    Grandmothers get a lot of cooking props, and grandfather's are unfortunately often left out. My grandfather woke up early every morning and made a huge breakfast for everybody. I'm not a fan of breakfast food (I know, I'm weird) so he'd make me special things that he knew I liked. Even in the times he was going in for chemo he'd wake up and fix whoever was at the house a big breakfast. Grandpa's rule.

    I grew up spoiled, we killed what needed to be killed, then hung it up in the barn. After that, the next time the men folk saw the game was when it was being served for supper.

    Fish were different, the men cleaned\cooked the fish....

    My PaPaw would invite everyone over for a fish fry, then go catch the fish. The man used more peanut oil than any person alive.

    My granddaddy did this. Obviously much more confident than I am. And I don't remember when he didn't produce.
