New Jets QB Matt Flynn pockets a small guarantee -- $60,000 Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer EAST RUTHFORD, N.J. -- If newly signed quarterback Matt Flynn doesn't make the New York Jets' opening-day roster, he won't walk away empty handed. As part of the one-year contract he signed on Wednesday, Flynn received a $60,000 signing bonus, according to ESPN data. The rest of the contract -- an $870,000 base salary -- isn't guaranteed. The Jets are hopeful that Flynn will recover from his hamstring injury, absorb the offense and perform well enough to justify a roster spot. If their plan falls through, he'll get $60,000 for less than three weeks on the job -- not bad, huh? Once the season begins, he'll be paid on a weekly basis -- $51,176 per game. If Flynn is released when Geno Smith returns from his broken jaw -- they're saying he'll be sidelined four games -- he'll pocket about $265,000. The price of quarterback insurance.
remember when flynn had that 480 yds 6 td meaningless game and the packers almost made him their franchise player. even god had to nix that deal. flynns charmed life didnt need to get even more ridiculous.
it didnt hurt his cause. but i was praying the pack franchised him (14 mill per) while aaron rodgers (8 mill) started.
Seattle just got finished paying him. He signed a 3 year 26 million dollar deal with them in 2012. Then Oakland, then Green Bay again. The dude has done pretty well for himself. He will walk away from football one day with no major injuries. Been a nice life, plus he has pretty good seats to games.
Another thing Flynn has going for himself is the NFL pension. This will be his 8th season in the league. I don't know how it works or how long you have to be in the NFL to be vested but I'm pretty sure he already is. Don't know how much he will be getting. It's probably based on longevity and the amount earned during your career. When the Goldman family got a judgement against O.J. Simpson I read that his NFL pension could not be a part of the judgement so the Juice continued to receive $55,000 a month. Probably still getting it while in prison. That was almost 20 years ago. By now with all the collective bargaining agreements and the fact that players are paid a lot more than back then the pension would be much higher. Flynn has probably already earned more than O.J. did in his whole career. I think you can start getting the pension around age 50.
$55k a month 20 years ago. OJ was one of the highest paid players in the league for his time but now even long term backup QB's make more than him. I wouldn't be surprised if Flynn's would be $100K. Guys like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady no telling how much they'll get. Even players like Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, ect. are making $20 Million a year.
