i dunno, i kinda like the idea of letting people in, letting them get a part of the riches of capitalism. then maybe all countries will see how awesome it is when people are leaving their sorry ass wretched countries, and then all countries becomes free-market democracies, realizing it is the most rational system, and then we have world peace.
Beyond the fact that they are criminals and shouldn't be here to fix her roof. It's not a free market. Hire illegal Mexicans and you can pay them cash under the table at a wage that is below minimum wage. You have no payroll taxes and they don't pay any taxes into the system. Hire and American at the same wage and they only bring home 75% of the hourly wage because of taxes. On top of that the employer has to pay payroll taxes. I understand and agree with your view of free trade but in this case I feel that the US citizen is restricted from competing.
You are normally very bright, but have a bit of utopian mind set on this issue. Being such a fan of capitalism, you probably have a good appreciation of supply and demand. There is one reason no one wants these jobs, b/c of low pay. However, if they remain unfilled the employer has no choice but to increase incentives to fill that position. The hiring of illegals holds down wages for all. Not to mention everything lsugrad mentioned. Also, it is just a little bit of a security concern from a national security standpoint. It is sad be we are a reactive, not proactive government. It will take a terrorist getting in from Mexico to do something about the issue, when everyone knows it should be addressed right now.
As a Bush voted this was one of the reasons I had to hold my nose to vote for him. Not that my vote mattered in Texas. I think we should build a huge fence around the US, and mount 50 calibur guns every 20 feet. But hey I am a right wing nut job... So F me...
I voted "yes" because I think the question was a bit too simple to be answered with either a "yes" or a "no." There are cases where yes, I think illegal immigrants should be given amnesty and citizenship, so there you have it. A "no" would have meant "no exceptions", the way I read the question.
i was only half serious. i admit to ignorance on the immigration issue. however i disagree with your points about wages. i think if people are willing to work for less than you, you should either work for less or become more educated or whatever, or change careers. i do not favor americans over mexicans. i say if mexicans want to take your job because they will work for half your salary, too bad for you. i say let them work. thats definitely good news for the employer. i have no idea about the security question and for all i know we should shut down all immigration.
You mean you would consider that a problem? From your stance on almost every employment issue, it sounds like you wouldn't have an issue with anything an employer would do to save money.
