On this day in 1978, the first baby conceived by in vitro fertilization (they referred to them as "test tube babies" at the time) was born in Manchester, England. On this day in 1956, the Italian liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm in heavy fog off Nantucket. 51 people on the Andrea Doria were killed in the collision, but ships responding to the distress call successfully evacuated every remaining passenger and crew member before the ship sank hours later.
