Last I checked those teams didn't spot us any points. Some people might have said UAB was a bye week also...
With the above being said, I am really concerned that the offensive gameplan was dictated by the degree of execution , or lack of execution, by the players. How can they open up if there if a propensity to turn the ball over, or if the WR's were already dropping passes or not able to run proper and good routes in practice? Was the "play not to lose" a philosophy of Jimbo? ________ Alaska Medical Marijuana
Ch0sn0ne - my bad; I never have time to preview these things. Brevity is the soul of wit. istsl, I'd counter that what OSU's 2002 and 2003 show is that Miles will open it up, assuming he's running the show, WHEN he thinks he has the horses to do so. Did it twice in a row, in fact. So that leads me to believe, unless he has some short-term memory problems, that IF he was as conservative on offense as you think he was (I'm not so sure - I'll leave that for another day), then he determined, after watching a lot more film than you or me, that he could not.
Just consider this: You have Xtraordinary Speed Carter, Benny Gazelle, and Early to the 40 Doucet as part of your receiving corp. Do you not design an offense around all that speed? Do you not just open up the skies and force defenders to stay back on their heels waiting for one, 2 or all 3 of these speedsters to blaze down the field, thus opening up delayed runs, screen passes, quick slants and the like to beat defenses time after time? Were these 3 guys that incompetent that they were not much of a factor at all in our game planning? Right now Early Doucet and especially Xavier Carter look like complete busts from all the hype they received in their recruiting year. These were 2 of the best 4 receivers in all of the land. And yet they hardly factored into this offense in 2005...their 2nd full year playing college ball.
PS: We had all those same receivers last year & they were just as fast. It just doesn't work that way. Speed is only helpful if you can catch.
The transition from being a freshman to a sophomore is probably the biggest improvement you will have (in most cases). There is no way you are saying Early Doucet cannot catch a pass.
So did Bowe and Buster (it went right thru his arms, but u catch the drift)....maybe we should have a 2 tight end and a wing T backfield on every play.
Yet they shouldn't, because they had the transition from freshmen to sophmores under Saban & that's when they grow the most...
